Hi All, Just wondering whether my rig could do with a upgrade. I've had this setup (minus 8GB ram) for 2 years now... CPU: i5-3750K MOBO: Asus P8Z77-V RAM: Kingston HyperX Blu 16GB (4 x 4GB) SSD: OCZ Vertex 3 120GB HDD: Seagate Barracuda 2TB GPHX: Sapphire Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition 2GB PSU: Corsair 650W Case: Cooler Master Elite 335 Screen: Dell U2412M OS: Win 7 64Bit Mainly thinking, CPU/Mobo or Graphics Card, or is what I have sufficient for now? Cheers,
Only things I would be looking at upgrading there would be maybe get a larger SSD or a better gpui although the 7870 is still capable, it all depends on what you play really A better case might aid with cooling it all but you may find yours to be sufficient. I don't think you will get much noticeable extra performance by upgrading the cpu unless you do particularly heavy cpu usage stuff.
For me it would be the case for a change in aesthetics, and a better GPU for the peen framerates. I doubt you'd notice any difference at all from a platform upgrade unless you're rendering or modelling on there. Other than the inconvenience of course Sandy/Ivy i5 chips are just about as capable as the Has well variants, particularly in gaming.
Thanks for the advice guys Glad my initial thinking aligns with the mighty Bit-Techers Just to clarify/answer questions: It is used for light "office" work, word/excel/access, gaming and limited video encoding/transcoding. My main "gaming" at the moment is playing catchup on the last ~5+yrs of games (see my posts in the Steam Calculator thread for what I mean... post1, post2) Just seen lots of shiny recently and getting the urge...
you can work on the ancillaries (CPU + GPU cooler, fans, etc.) to increase efficiency and add quietness..
Change nothing. Freshen it with a new case and a rebuild if you feel the urge to do something but otherwise, as has already been stated, it is a decent machine. If you want to max out Metro Last Light, then perhaps buy a GTX 970 or equivalent but otherwise, I would just continue to use and enjoy.
Thanks for the input guys, much appreciated +rep to all. Will keep an eye out for a new case (and probably a modular PSU to make the build tidier).
