Photos Woodturning - Rattle

One of my coworkers had an ash tree removed from his backyard. I got a decent sized piece of the trunk, and this is the second project I've made with it (the bottle stopper was the first). I had the blank ready to turn almost a year ago, and it's been sitting on my workbench since then. Other projects, life, and the Houston summer kept delaying the rattle, but with fall here it's finally nice enough to work in the garage again.

Here's the rattle that I made for our friends' baby. Turned from a single piece of ash, with hand carved handle twist. The handle twist is something you'll see in a lot of my work because it's something that I enjoy doing.

PS: where's the seam?

 

johnim40: From chucking the blank on the lathe to applying the butcher block fish was just under 2 hours.

LennyRhys: There is no seam. The rings were turned right on the rattle.

 

Thats quick how were the rings done then without breaking them

 

Thanks. The technique is called "captive ring turning." Here's a decent video showing how it's done with a dedicated tool:



I'm too cheap to buy the specialized tool, so I just use a standard small parting tool. It's a little trickier and takes a bit of patience and feel to prevent the ring from breaking, but it works.

I finally finished the project video for this one. The video part was fairly straightforward and only took about an hour to cut together. The hard part was finding the right music, and I ultimately settled on a bit of Debussy. You can never go wrong with Debussy. The real challenge is finding decent royalty-free music. There is still a bit of grey area with Archive.org, but the music selections were in the "Community Audio" section, so I'm operating under the assumption that they're free to use unless someone tells me otherwise.

That is beautiful.

Watching the videos takes me back to my childhood "helping" my grandfather. He was very much into turning and produced some amazing decorative golf clubs for the local club to award for long service.
