I have a Z87I with a G3258 cpu and the setting in the UEFI won't let me change the multiplier.

This cpu is supposed to have an unlocked multiplier right?

Do I need to change anything else before it will let me change the multiplier?

Does the board need a BIOS update to support overclocking on that chip?

Or is it as simple as selecting manual instead of auto in the UEFI? (not familiar with that board)

Sorry I was supposed to include in the original post that I have just updated to the latest bios.

Unfortunately it caused me to have to completely re-install windows 10 as it wouldn't boot after the update.

It also seems to post slower now but I'm not too bothered by that.

The only option I have next to multi is the word auto but it doesn't have brackets round it like the other options that I can change do.

    It's this board

Is it a W10 thing, seeing as it's not the full working product yet. It shouldn't affect it but from what you have said about updating the bios and it being slower , it a possibility.

One way to find out for sure, would be to create a small partition on a HDD and install W7 or W8. If it's all ok then you have your answer.

The other thing worth doing is to set everything in the bios to default and the try overclocking again manually.

But this is bios/uefi level so windows 10 hasn't even come into play.

Reset it to defaults and touch ONLY the CPU multiplier. Change it to something low like 35x and see what happens. :)

Have you got the latest BIOS on there?

Tried all combinations like the + or - button to change it too?

Yup I did the latest bios this afternoon.

Any changeable options have brackets round them the multi auto option doesn't.

How very bizarre. Can you load any OC profiles (if it has any)?

    I'll try tomorrow.

I've been so put off overclocking as every time I have tried over the last tens years I've always encountered issues.

I don't expect it to be plain sailing but when your told that a simple multi change will suffice then you get annoyed when it doesn't happen.

Make sure the "OC Genie" is off, if it's on you won't be able to OC manually.

I'm not familiar with MSI motherboards, but I will try to help anyway. I actually avoid MSI for the most part and stick with ASRock, ASUS or GIGABYTE.

Well Overclock genie was on and set to auto overclock the cpu to seeming 4.3ghz.

I turned it off and the options changed but I still can't access the multi option.

Here' a couple of images of the bios, poor quality phone shots sorry.

Does the board definitely support over clocking on that CPU? Anyone done it elsewhere?

Hmm I don't know but the fact the OC genie is doing it should mean it does shouldn't it?

    Is there a G3258 that doesn't unlock.

OC genie by using the CPU base clock strap which is similar to old style overclocking. But no all 3258s are unlocked. My only thinking is the Z87 chipset not liking the newer chip.

On the bios image with OC Genie turned on it shows the multi set to 43 so it must be adjustable surely.

:duh: I should read the entire thread first. Any beta BIOSes available?
