Nvidia 760 is cheaper and the r280x is faster for the exact same money on daily deals. The card is not fast enough to ever need the memory.

    Surprising....

No better than the 2GB Nvidia 760 that I've just bought and I have the extra PhysX & CUDA goodies (for what they're worth),also uses less power.

All for less than this card costs.(got my MSi Gaming OC for £170)

    Smug mode engaged....

Roughly a 5% increase in performance and a 33% price hike compared to the R9 270x, thats a pretty massive fail in the value department.

Tbh this card is very good value for money.

You can get two, for the same money as single GTX780 worth, overclock them and have more than triple the performance.

And because someone complained about the price/performance. A GTX780 costs 100% more, for 46% of the performance........

However a 270X going to run out of steam when comes to higher resolutions, as the GTX760 does and not worth to utilise CF.

I do like the design of the HSF XFX have used, apart from that I wouldn't go near it because of its average performance and high power usage.

Show us some benchmarks that have the R9 280 outperforming the GTX 780.

Looks like a tidy overclocker but wtf were they thinking with that price?

ocaholic tested the R9 280X in CF vs 780Ti and at that time the R9 280X CF gave 9% more in average performance and still had an price-tag more that 100 usd below the GTX 780Ti...
(power-consumption went dough up with 300W)

doubt the standard R9 280 would follow but OC in CF it might be as good or surpass the GTX 780Ti...

I wrote you can buy 2 R9 280 for the price of a SINGLE GTX780, overclock them and they will be 3 times faster FOR THE SAME MONEY. Hell they will be even faster (almost twice) than the GTX780Ti for almost 2/3 the money.

Yeah, two R9 280s overclocked are almost as fast as two 780Tis...

I'll have a pint of what Panos is drinking. Clearly it's very potent stuff.

No I would like what you have mate. Who said that 2 280 will be faster than 2 780Ti?

Ok exageration, but they will still 2 R9 280 going to be faster by 50% than a single 780Ti at 2/3 of the price.

Yeah, exageration is the word for it.
Yeah, that'd be cool if it were the case.

    280x xfire vs a single 780Ti - Anandtech clicky

Given the 280 is a fair margin slower than the 280x, your claims are somewhat questionable.

ocaholic tested 2xR9 280X vs a single GTX 780Ti (30.04.14) and the R9 280X was 9% faster in overall at the 3\4 of the price (440 vs 550 USD)

the R9 280 will be even cheaper than 440 for the pair but they didn't beat the 280X so they will be below 9% over the GTX 780Ti the 280X got and then far from 50%...
but giving a lot of bang for the buck... that they do
(if you don't play the failgames with absurd micro-stuttering)

According to the tests performed in this review, the R9 280 would need to perform around 50% better to match a non overclocked GeForce 780 (and more in some tests). If you could overclock it that much (which I highly doubt) you would be comparing a heavily overclocked card with a stock card. Put 2 R9 280 in SLI, then you will get, if I understand SLI correctly, somewhere around 1.6 to 1.8 times the performance of 1 card. If both cards have the same level of overclocking, the 2 x R9 280 will outperform the single 780 by a small percentage (maybe up to 20%). Only just fast enough to beat a 780Ti, and certainly nowhere near double the performance. Simple maths.

Add to that the extra power draw, and you will soon lose the extra saving for the cheaper cards.

Performance and cost in relation to its competitors aside, it is a very tidy looking graphics card; I absolutely love the cooler on it.

The R9 270x is cheap as chips and perfectly sufficient for average joe to game with at the most commonly used resolution (1920 x 1080).

But above 1080p you really should be looking at nothing less than a R9 290 as a bare minimum, which disqualifies the R9 280 as well.
