How much faster? Amd x2 4600 vs i7 920?

Hi guys, I was just wondering if anyone could give me a ballpark figure of how much faster an i7 920 cpu would be compared to my current amd x2 4600 (s939) cpu. I'm talking about video conversion. Mostly just Vob Ifo files to avi with xvid encoding. Would be using Auto GK. It takes me about an hour and half to convert a dvd at the moment. How long would it take with the i7 920 using Auto GK? Any ideas? I assume it would probably be about a third of that, but I don't want to be too optimistic. Any help would be appreciated.

on my core i7 it was running at roughly 2x speed (2-pass encoding). so a 1 hour show was taking half an hour to encode.

the maths isnt that difficult...

you are encoding a 1.5 hour film and it is taking 1.5 hours.
i am encoding a 1 hour film and it is taking 0.5 hours.

if we are using the same settings then i am encoding at twice the speed of yours.

DivX conversion of MPEG

606 sec = 4600+
213 sec = i7 920

ALL stock speeds.

it will save you enough time in video conversion to write that novel you always wanted to pen.

None of them mention your CPU because it is obsolete. And there is no direct translation in FPS from an AMD X2 to a Core i7. The architecture is completely different, both of the CPU and the chipsets involved. You have to factor in faster RAM speed, triple channeling, improved X58 chipset (over AMD/nForce), and better optimized instruction set of the CPU. It's like comparing a Honda Accord to a BMW by only looking at engine displacement (read CPU frequency), they may be similar, but the cars perform very differently.

I wasn't asking why they didn't mention my cpu, but thanks for stating the obvious

THIS.

I went from a Opteron 165 @ 2.6Ghz (i.e. a FX-60) to a i7 920 at STOCK.

Its blisteringly fast, much better at multi-tasking too. The difference is hugely noticable, even doing office tasks, surfing etc.
