The other day I tried backing up one of my dvds to a mkv file using DVDshrink to first create an ISO and then handbrake to encode it but I wasn't that impressed with the results - it's a 2hr18min film (Black Hawk Down if you're interested) but the mkv created is 2.17GB and the quality isn't that great - don't get me wrong, it's not terrible, just that I've seen better quality from a file 1/3 of the size... After a bit of reading around, the settings I chose were: Container: MKV File CRF 20 Reference Frames 2 Maximum B-Frames and everything else default (I think) Any suggestions gratefully received
OOh I too would be interested in this but I think it's already been done somewhere on here before. Off to do a search
Just to add, the settings I tried to follow were here http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=205735&highlight=handbrake+settings
Try setting your CRF to 17.75 and use the high profile setting, I have mine set to that, everything else as default and it looks identical to the original DVD. I use default because I haven't had to time to experiment and there's just far too many options to play with.
On a 2 hour film get about 2.5GB. You could probably lower the CRF to 18, possibly 19 but I'm not sure what quality would be like and file size would be at those settings. I'll have a look when I get home though
