A costly one too, if you don't have a Vita... and if you don't have a Vita now, then it's mostly likely not something you'll enjoy playing in any case... so you'll be paying a high price for just playing PS4 games in house, somewhere else. I don't see why Sony have done this have done this, beside for the "me too". It wont' push Vita sales, and it won't PS4 sales. The problem is that the Vita is too good. Because it has a great screen, lots of features, lots of processing power on both CPU and GPU, and lots of memory. The device is too pricey.
I would not mind if there was a 100-150$ Vita, where you can only stream content from the PS4. That would be cool. And knowing Sony, they might step it up and integrate a basic CPU and GPU, for small phone like games on the go, if they decided to do this. That would actually hit Nintendo hard.
Given the potential of the 'second' screen I could see a market for it, but as you say, I am not going to fork out for a Vita just to play my PS4 games away from the 'big screen'. For them to make this work, then the Vita controller needs to be supplemental to the main screen and it also needs to be a damn site cheaper.

As I don't have to share my gaming screen with anyone (it's in a separate room to the family TV), it's harder for me to see the need, but maybe this is a genuine problem for some people.

I can only see this as a desperate attempt by Sony to boost sales of the Vita, but I can't see it working!

It's a genuine problem for some people. I only have a TV at home.. a CRT one (does 1080i though). 27inch of goodness (26inch viewable)!
I remember when I was kid, my parents where like turn it off, it makes so much noise. Or tehy wanted to watch TV. With the WiiU (or PS4 with Vita), it allows to plug headphones and continue to play games somewhere else.

They need to control their ever increasing production costs by using 'target pricing' to keep price to £40

Doesnt the vita have 2 shoulder buttons vs the PS3/4 4 shoulder buttons? how does that translate? And how would you 'click' on the sticks?

Can't stop giggling, if the newest rumors about the Xbox are true, i.e. "allways online" and "$500".

PS4 seems like the only choice in this case

Jrs77, it's not good to act like this.
Every console without exception are awesome entertainment device. Each consoles cater to a different audience. As much as you don't like XBox, people who enjoys the first party games or first party published games, won't get to enjoy on another console... they might not even be playing games even.

Console is about exclusivity. Which ones has exclusive games that caters to the most people. That console will be the winner of the "war" for this generation.

As for the XBox online, I can assure you that this was all a publicity stunt of some kind. Here me out:
1- Dev console are always online. This prevents the console from being sold. As companies have static IP, it's a good way to lock a console to a location.
2- They wanted to see the reaction of the public if they choose to have always on system.
3- Everyone was talking about PS4 non stop... now, no one does. It just killed the mood.

That aside, Sony said that you could play used game, but never said if you needed to pay extra to be able to. Sony is keeping their lip closed.

Always online doesn't bother me at all - it's not as if I use the Xbox on the train!

It's going to be about game titles more than anything. I'll wait and see what the games are like and then I'll make a choice of one, both or neither.

I am pretty certain though that following the 'Lowest Common Denominator' rule that the big publishers have, it will make no difference whatsoever which console you buy.

Who said, that I don't like the Xbox?

It's personal preference for very few reasons actually why I chose the PS3 over the Xbox. I like the controller of the Xbox better for example, but being forced to pay a sub to play online and having no BluRay-Player simply ruled it out, And then there's Gran Turismo ofc.

May 21st we'll get more information.

Dev consoles are always online? Really? I don't want to pour cold water on you GB, but I know a bunch of PS3 developers (who have worked on the PS2, GCN and Wii) and their developer units aren't plugged in to the internet. One of them even has an old devkit PS2 and Wii at home, and having played on them, I can certify they didn't need an internet connection to work.

Developers don't sell their devkits on eBay because they cost a small fortune, and are easily trackable by serial numbers. Not because they are tracked via IP addresses.

I'm fully expecting the new Xbox to be online only as a consumer release. It makes sense for Microsoft, as they are pushing for a spot as a home media complex more than simply a gaming console. Always online allows them tightly control access to the system (preventing firmware hacking), which will encourage content providers to permit their content to be on the system. Pus it means it can be marketed as "more interactive".

Sony always knew that media attention over the PS4 would drop off at this stage. Don't worry, it'll pick up at E3.

Microsoft wants a console that is online only because they are trying to sell it as a media comsumption device not just a games console.

Microsoft wants you intergrated with all of its systems and they are all online. Microsoft is in a difficult spot but it either goes with what it wants to do or just makes a better games console the later option may be a tough sell in the current market.

No new console release since the ps3 xbox 360 and wii has seen great sales numbers, Vita,3ds, WII U have all been rather poor at sales and most of this has been attributed to the rise of the Smartphone and Tablets.

Wether the ps4 and new Xbox can do any better is very much a question most developers would like to know an answer too.

Needing an online connection to watch Netflix or whatever, playing multiplayer or even activating the games is perfectly fine with me.

Needing an online connection to play singleplayer or watching a BluRay tho is totally unacceptable.

It won't be "always on-line", MS would lose far too many sales from those who have little or no desire to connect to the internet or areas that have spotty (or even no) internet connection.

Well, pre-orders are now up in various places, including Amazon (who are listing £599 currently, but with a massive disclaimer that this is a placeholder price). Anybody buying?

I've ordered:
- PlayStation 4
- 2x extra DualShock4 controllers
- Watchdogs
- Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag
- Infamous: Second Son

I'm hoping for some sort of PS4 and Vita bundle, looks like the Vita might be worth it now.

Same here, I still haven't played uncharted golden abyss and that one of the reason i want a vita. As you said it may be worth getting one now since Sony will be looking to integrate Vita more into PS4 especially with cross-play. Just wish Sony would bring out a white Vita here
