Hello! Well i have been a member about 1½-2 years but never posted anything, so i tought i would do something about it and what better way than starting a project log. The point here is as the title says, to make a standalone mp3 player from old stuff. And by standalone i mean that there wont be no 17" screen, keyboard or mouse or a graphic card for the matter. The operating system will be MSDOS 7.1. This project have been on ice about 6-8 months for various reasons, but i tought it would be a good project to start with here. Stuff i´ll be using: -An old small satellite reciver box will do as case. -The motherboard is a Tomato Tx100 BAbyAT because of it´s size. -Processor will be a 100-166mHz pentium -A slimeline cd drive -A 2.5" 2,1Gb harddrive -Soundcard will be some soundblaster combatible card -PSU will problary be some modified mATX PSU -A 2x16 LCD display -And problary something else to..... I will upload some old picture i have lying around my harddrive somewhere (will have to resize them first), yet today. But first im gonna go out for a smoke (but no pancake).
case pics... First out is a few pics of the case. Front/side: Front: Front: Inside: Some more pic´s of the case can be found here Well that was it for now. Pictures of the hardware is comming.
more pics.... Some more pics Motherboard and slimeline cd-drive: Motherboard: Motherboard in case: Motherboard and cd-drive in case: Well thats was it for today. Im off to sleep now, but any feedback/questions is greatly appriciated. Also if anyone could recomend a dos mp3 player that supports lcd displays and input's except for DAMP please tell me. Thx.
Looks like an interesting project. how will you be controlling the playout? and I'm guessing the source files will be else where on a network? might this have issues under dos? Might a cut down linux be better?
http://www.opus.co.tt/dave/sound.htm ^found these players im rearly not sure about using that display under dos, dos isn't multi tasking.
looks good I've been looking for someone to do a low cost mod. I read these forums and see all these water cooled rigs with machined parts. I'm very much like you and lurk in the forums and never posted a guide. Good Luck
He'll probably use a right angled riser card, which are fairly cheap. One thought: Have you tried booting or at least POSTing the mainboard to see if it will run with out a video card - some won't go past POST without it.
