    Hi

I'm putting together a freenas box using my old P4 machine, but want to load it with a few of my spare 1tb drives. I know it's a power beast, but it will only be used for periodic backups and not running 24/7 and the budget I've assigned (Like none!) is restricting me to what I've got lying around.

    But...

The lanparty mobo has only two Sata ports, and I could really do with another two to four. So I'm on the lookout for an el-cheapo PCI sata card with four ports, and it has to be compatible with freenas. I won't be doing any RAID or 'funky stuff' in freenas, I'll just be exposing each drive to my home network to be location for duplicate copies of local data

    There's various items on ebay

Anyone got any experience on these or similar? I've used rocketraids & adaptecs before, but don't have one available for this build.

BTW, Freenas works great. I have it booting from an old USB stick. From initial decision to fully up and running - an hour, and that included the time to scratch build a ghetto 3.5 to 5 1/4 drive mount out of foam-card.

Oh, but if anyone wants to swap my P4 rig for something smaller and quieter but with more SATA ports I'd be seriously interested... long shot!

In case anyone bumps into the thread and wants to know what I bought:

I bought a PCI 4 port Sata card from ebay, new for £16. It's based on the Silicon Image SIL3114 chip and works a treat. I've not tested speed, I may well update this thread once I've got the four samsung F1s moved from the main PC and Raided up.
