I appreciate that language will evolve and change over time but I feel that the media politicians and others to numerous to mention have destroyed the true meaning of certain words. A couple spring to mind.

Hero: A person who, in the opinion of others, has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and is regarded as a model or ideal.
But nowadays it seems to refer to anyone just happens to no someone or was very near a conflict zone.
What do we now call the people who actually perform over and above the call of duty and risk their lives to save others?

Celebrity: A famous or well-known person.
Appear on a reality show and suddenly you are a celebrity,in fact no someone who has been in a reality show and you can also be classed as a celebrity. All these celebrity versions of various shows, most of the time I am saying, WTF is that person or him or her? TV seems to be populated by people I have never heard of. Is it me?

A couple of phrases that are not only pretty meaningless but annoy me to hell.

Lessons will be learnt: Yeah right. No they won't or very rarely are.

We are all in this together: That one really makes me angry.

    Anyone got any others?

My least favourite phrase I hear all too often?

    Think outside the box.

Whilst this might have meant something once, it's now just churned out by clueless management when they want underpaid minions to solve a practically impossible problem.

    Just be yourself

When you don't really have any useful advice for why a person isn't doing well, tell them this gem of useless advice to make it seem like you know what you're talking about.

Yes and no on that one.. Sometime, yeah, people don't magically know what you want so you have to tell them what you want, totally understand that. But at the same time, asking too much can be worse than not asking at all as puts peoples backs up.

I always think thats a good one... I think its just said at the wrong time far too often..

"If people don't like you for who you are, they weren't worth your time in the first place" is what I used to be told, and its usually true.

The be yourself one irritates me. Because if it worked. I'd be so much richer and happier. :D

One that has no meaning to me: The right one will come to you.

Doesn't work that way in the world. Look for it, and it shall appear eventually. Just act like you're not looking for it.

The correct response to that phrase is: "That's what you'll be doing when I punch you to the ground"

I actually think that's a good advice. pretending to be someone else will never do anyone favours. It's certainly very sound advice for dates and interviews.

    unless you're an impressionist.

think outside the box is my personal pet hate. as people tend to use it to mean "don't think so logically" which is silly, because thinking logically is useful.

I'll be more enthusiastic about encouraging thinking outside the box when there's evidence of any thinking going on inside it. --Terry Pratchett
