Well, I'm back at it again. I just cannot be kept from my work shop any more. I have endeavored to to replace the plastic and metal cases of the past with new wooden ones. Here is a shot of my upstairs computer Armoire. I've decided to use just a simple frame and panel design for these four. Two from Maple and two from Cherry. I thought about mixing and matching but decided against it. Here is a shot of the wood bin. Here is a shot of the blanks: I must say, I did the math before hand to calculate the number of board feet I would need. and just made it in under the wire. I have just a few scrap pieces left to use as test stock. The cases are designed to support a full ATX, DVD, ATX PSU, and 2 HDDs. I am still working out the details to add up to 5 HDDs. Here is a shot of the blanks with the mortices and tenons made. The are all made off center. It would have been much easier to make them centered but I wanted to move them towards the outer edge and allow more flexibility with the panels. Here is a shot of the four cases assembled and dry-fitted. I still have to make the rabbets for all the panels. I plan on using 1/4" stock for the MOBO side and bottom; with 1/8" stock for the front and top. The door side will have frame and panelled door with a hinge in the middle. I have not decided what to name them yet, so Four Cases (wood) will probably remain.
4 horsemen of the Apocalypse. They have names but it's too late to remember them! Eenie, Meenie, Miney, Moe! couldn't resist The seasons - Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall. The 4 winds - North, South, East, West. 4 elements - Earth, Wind, Fire, Water - been done. 4 basic food groups - Pizza, Beer, Cheeseburgers, Beer. The 4 Musketeers - names are French and hard to mod on a case. john
I like that - Four Seasons, its also my favorite classical piece from Vavaldi. The biblical four horsemen of th apocalypse are War, Death, Famine and Pestilence. I could also go with the 3 Stooges and Shemp. (Mo, Larry and Curly) --- I like this one...
I always liked symmetry, so these four cases will definitely be great. From the Discworld novels i've got these: Death, War, Famine and Pestilence But there are also: * The Four Horsemen of The Common Cold Sniffles, Chesty, Nostril, Lack of Tissues or: * The Four Horsemen of Public holiday Storm, Gales, Sleet, Contra-flow or even: * The Four Horsemen of Panic Misinformation, Rumour, Gossip, Denial This is where I found them Mod on
Groucho, Harpo, Chico, Zeppo. That would work good if one system didn't have a sound card, and one you just didn't like. There's always Zappa's Sanzini brothers: Rudolph, Adolph, Jackoff, Pissoff.
What were those 4 other dwarfs that didn't make the final 7 - Sleazy, Horny, Sloppy and I can't remember the other one. All for a G rating - sad. john
Here are some more pics from this weekend's activities. I made all the 1/4" rabbets in all the rails and stiles. And cut all the MDF boards to size. Here is a shot of the spacious interior. It is designed to support a full ATX MOBO. That gives me plenty of space for everything else. Here is a shot of one of the cases.
I was planning on using 80mm fans. I have some 120s but hadn't decided to use them. Also, these are older computers (abt 2 yrs) and no need for the high end water cooling. I don't plan on overclocking any of them. But... in a few months who knows, I just may.
Had some time this weekend, so here are some shots of my progress. I am using Lacewood from the front and top of the cases. Here are the four cases with the mock ups on front. Here are the four front faces with the elements cut out and the DVD tray as well Here is earth, with the test piece on top. It is Lacewood with 3 layers of polyurethane. No staine Here is fire, with the test piece on top. It is also Lacewood with a Cherry stain and 2 layers of polyurethane on it, and sanded with 220 grit sandpaper. Here is a shot of wind with the two pieces added. They will be afixed to the plexi when the lights come in. The plan is to back light all the symbols with colors to denote the power for the system is on or off. Blue for Water, White for Wind, Red for Fire and Green for Earth. Still have to cut the backplates for all the boxes. Also need to decide on a door. I had been toying with the idea of building shoji doors for each... not sure yet.
It has been a while since my last post. Just have not seemed to have the time to work on the computer cases. So here are a just a few shots of progress. Here is a shot of the 4 cases. I decided to use the artwork of Master Hokusai for the cases. I found some great photos of his work. Here are the four internal mounts for the DVD and HDDs. Here are the frames for the Shoji Doors. Here is a close up of 'Fire' As you can see, my entire shop has been taken over with this project.
Oooh, great choice with Hokusai. My two favorite prints are The Great Wave and Red Fuji. Very nice start. I'm looking forward to further updates.
