Just wondering after reading another post.

I seldom update the bios on cheap builds for friends. However, I do update the bios on my primary pc within the first week of building it, once I know everything is working.

I usually only update fix problems, but now that most manufacturers have tools that make it easy I tend to update more often.

I do it when i build a new rig. Then I'll do it to fix issues i suspect a bios update may fix. Other then that I rarely update.

    Don't really believe that it's a risk.

Successfully managed to kill my BIOS during flashing it to an earlier version.

    That's £10 I won't see again. :duh:

I should do it more often... there is the occasional performance gain at time i guess.
Updated an old one ages ago, brought the boot time down significantly.

Not really worth the hassle unless a newer bios has some nifty stuff to it. Only updated this current mobo once - and the new bios clocks so much better ;)

Updating a BIOS isn't that much of a risk... but I avoid it usually because my motherboard is a bit problematic -an EVGA 680i (A1). I've had plenty of problems before, but the current config seems fine, so I'll leave it alone...

My cousin has an Asus board and I update his when I get a chance because the newer ones are guaranteed to fix something. Plus if it breaks, its not my computer :p

I usually look at updating if I get some new hardware in there...

I think you'd have to be a real tool to irreversibly damage your board by updating the BIOS. It's not exactly ground-shaking stuff, and you can always clear the CMOS if it goes wrong.

Can be useful to get additional settings and options that aren't available in the vanilla BIOS - there are usually a few. Also helpful if a bit of hardware gets what I like to call 'haunted' - i.e. it refuses to work in the motherboard despite both being functional and compatible.

Always. Updating the BIOS unlocks the full potential of this board... :D

Having said that I haven't updated the BIOS since 2006, but hey the board is getting on a bit. :p

When I got my board I needed to update so it would work fully with my wolfdale, even though it seemed ok before the update. I had heard of issues so I thought I would catch them out before they appear for me.

I then updated through about 4 flavours of the new beta bios and am now on the released version of this bios.

There is a new beta out which temps me, as I know that each beta seemed to change around the bios a bit or add a new function.

Only if there's a problem OOTB that is solved in a later bios revision, or if the OOTB bios doesn't support the CPU officially (IE: My gigabyte supposedly didn't support the 9950 until revision F5, but it was working fine on F3) for the sake of tech support calls, if there are any.

Most of the time I don't bother - If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Or so they say.

I went for only to correct a problem, but I'm with modgodtanvir on this. I've got an A1 680i, and after the hastle of making it work, the bios it has now is the one its sticking with! Back in the days of the Socket A LanParty boards I went through pretty much every bios out there in the hunt for more clockspeed though.
