    They shoulda done it.

Makes it far easier to block it that way. ALso would help pop-up blockers a lot by blocking anything ending in .xxx.

    Bad decision.

Yet I can't help but think that there would still be plenty of it out there even with an official .xxx domain to segregate it. Google, IRC, and newsgroups will still exist.

I'm not sure that a .xxx domain would be a good idea - mainly on Freedom of speech issues.

If the powers that be decide that anything with adult content should be on .xxx - does that mean that horror film sites would be included - or games with violent or adult content i.e. GTA ?

Then we could get into the situation where your ISP might decide that they don't want to allow you access to .xxx sites etc...

It would be far to easy for the radical right to start to decide what we see or do if this was taken to it's logical conclusions.

It wouldn't have helped in the slightest. You would need to enforce the new rules, and there wil be loads of porn sites that can't be bothered to move to .xxx No-one can scan millions of sites for porn, and people have differnet definitions of porn. What is too much? Define the differance between nude and scantily-clad. Basically, they chose the right decision.

A very small step, it seems nothing to do with the internet can be internationally, or even nationally, enforced. The policeman has no teeth. And greed always beats common sense. So good idea, but file it with world peace and an end to hunger. :sigh:

How about a .god domain name so I can block the Christian right?

Thou shalt not take the Lord's name in vain. ;)

Not that that is really His name. Nor would that be in vain, one hopes. But there'd be objections ;)

Have a good point, I was kinda for it till I started to think about people getting too pc about it.

its a mess as it is with businesses using .com and .co.uk instead of .biz etc, why add more confusion....

I just did a google for "online adult content" - 66,800,000 results. It's not that hard to find as it is.

In all reality, ICANN just wanted to have it so they could sell a billion more domains and make a gazillion dollars, but the whole idea of making it easier to identify (and thus block) pr0n was a good cover. I'm sure it'll come up again in another six months, as it always does.

Although it would be a good idea as it would make it easier to block/find (whichever you want to do :p) porn sites, as others have said, it would be impossible to implement.

A good idea, just not very realistic.

I agree with Veles here. The original idea was maybe a convenient sounding one. But the process of even attempting to catagorise what would and would not go into the .xxx catagory would have been a big mess, with lots of legal shindigs, variations from country to country no doubt. Just one big mess.

yes, good idea but impossible to enforce, tho imo it may have actually been a good thing for the pr0n industry, it may have actually helped thier sales.

I personally would like someway to block without blocking some sites that i may want to visit. and no content filter could do it perfectly. im not a prude but i just prefer the real thing.

Prime example: my girlfriend is an art student who specializes in nudes. it is not pr0n, but if she put it on the net would they want it on .xxx? and when she does research for a painting and looks at other nudes online would she have to go to .xxx?

besides some people (think Something About Mary) can get excited by black and white underware advertisements.

    its just not practical
(btw, I have 'Jesus Freak' tatooed on half of my neck if anyones wondering which side i'm on)

.xxx or no .xxx makes no difference in beign able to find stuff easier, just run a seard for whatever porn type word takes your fancy at that time and I am sure you will find stuff just as easily.

Unless it was compulsory to be registered as a .xxx site if you had 'adult content' on your site then being able to block stuff easier would do nothing either.

all in all, a good idea, impossible to implement.

where would you draw the line on what goes under the .xxx domain

plus everyone would just globally block *.xxx

that would be a -ve for the pr0n industry ...

ISP's would probably ban alot of those sites (like they allready ban certain ports)

Y'know, i'm really getting sick of this ICANN crap. It's just another place where a US corp is trying to control something they don't own!

"Christian / right-wing groups suggested that it would make porn easier to find and more legitimate, whereas actually it should be stamped out."

i like the "more legitimate" statment, as if it sharing .com and .org didnt legitimize it more, sharing extentions of anything but government sites. porn isnt hard to find as it is... but everytime somone types in Whitehouse.com (used to be a porn site, now a news site apearently) i can think of reason to add a .XXX extention. and it would make it easy for me to find porn when i wanted it:p

"Porn makers complained that it would diminish their trade and kill off all the marketing that they've done over the last few years."

i dont see how ti would diminish anything.... and i think its easy to tell whats porn or not... go into a book store and see which books have the paper sleves over them.... seems pretty easy to me.

"It would also make it easier for parents and businesses to filter out potentially indecent content and prevent their children or employees from stumbling across it. There is nothing wrong with introducing additional suffixes that make it easier to segregate content."

i belive in this as well. i mean there is a point that kids should learn and a way they should learn. as far as at work, i think sites liek these should stay in private viewing.

do i enjoy porn.....Hell Yes. do i belive in segrigation... no. but i dont see this as segrigation but more as an easy warning system. i dont think andyone would accidentaly type in .xxx at the end of a web adress. there for, if you didnt want to see it, you dont have to accidentaly. its not like tis not hard for ISP's to decide what kind of content they want on tehir line, they can already scan for phrases. but this way with a .xxx suffix, its easier to separate educational information, from raw porn.

i remember years ago thinking it would be amusing and usefull enough to have porn on .xxx, if anythign offer it as an option, i think that would atleast alow it to catch on naturaly. i know if i had a porn site i would take a XXX suffix.

and it would be nice for a seprate religious ranting domain :p

.xxx really is unfeasible in this day and age. MAYBE 5 years ago, but today it is kind of pointless. One man's opinion of what goes in .xxx may not be anothers', regulation is oppression, and the absolute price of moving are just a few of the reasons I debated at my recent debate club meeting. Unfortunately, with Bush in the White House, one man's opinion is now law, even if it is religious. :sigh:

Did anyone else read the title as "Adult industry is stiffed with .xxx rejection"? :worried: :sigh:
