ok so a friend of mine did a BIG upgrade - phenom x 920 to an msi z97 gaming 5 with an i7 4790 (and a massive cooler)

now heres the problem - he keeps getting random BSOD`s.

ram seems to pass memtest (although will lend him mine).

but - any idea`s? it usual is IRQL less than equal , even on a fresh install of windows

crucial M500 ssd as well btw

I read as far as MSI.

    Any new Bios for it?

Knew someone who had a Z77 Mpower that used to bluescreen from new till a new firmware for the USB3 controller came out.

Has he downloaded the MSI auto-updater and re-done ALL of the drivers? My Z97I AC GAMING (ITX one) had BSOD's till I installed their software and updated all the drivers through it.. Guess one of them was the issue! There was also a BIOS it updated.. Might be a bad BIOS that they shipped the boards with at first?

Has he kept his old RAM? The new Motherboard could be feeding incorrect voltage to it. Try manually setting it at 1.65v

Hahahaha. I was going to say that this morning but I kept my mouth shut because I didn't want to blame every BSOD on incorrect RAM voltage.

What I'm saying though, is force it manually in the BIOS - have you done that?

Update your sound driver straight from realtek. That might sort it. Also check your front audio connector is on the board correctly.

Every time it has come up with something that is driver related that I recognise I all ways update it or attempt to fix & google it trust me it doesn't make the slightest blind bit of difference just after a while of going around in circles you just start to give up & have enough possibly loose the will to live :)

does not matter how many BSODS I try to fix they keep coming

I may well be trying to do that after I have tried some new ram first

as it has happened since putting in a new CPU & BOARD to cover my own a**e I will send both back in case there's a problem with one & not the other will just be annoying if they test it and they say its fine or they think it is fine & I get the same stuff back again so I need to ask them about these things on the phone when I ring them again

If you have a spare soundcard try that and disable the onboard. As reading his blue screen that looks like its real tech audio that is crashing it. Or specifically the high def audio function which nobody uses. Try disabling that if no spare sound card.

Bit locker drive encription was the other one. Only real way to fix a pc is to work through each blue screen identifitying the issue.

Changing the ram will likely have little if any effect. The windows default drivers are out of date so if let them install your installing 1 year + out of date drivers on win 8 closer to 3-4 years on windows 7 unless you have the service pack 1-2 disk.

You could also paste all your blue screens so we can try and read them all as it's not just a wall of text or numbers.

cheers matey - its in my own AMD rig , and its working well - no bsods (tried Sandra and pcmark) and xmp timings....

im leaning towards either board or cpu..... so sourcing a 1150 Pentium dual core now to try that.

It's so so so unlikely to be the CPU. I've never ever heard of someone's CPU being broken.
