This is just some pondering at the moment but as i game at 1680 x 1050, is there any need for a 5870? Or would something cheaper breeze through games at the Highest settings at that res?

Your right in that something like a 5850 would cope fine at that resolution, however, if you want your card to stand the test of time, it is worth considering the 5870. Screen prices have and will continue to drop rapidly and 1080p is becoming the standard gaming resolution. So I don't think it's absurdly out of the question.

Ah k, well i know i don't intend to replace my Monitor in the near future so was wondering if it'd be a waste to splash all that cash in a 5870 if it was going to be overkill.

    what he said ^^^^

to be honest, i feel 5850 is perfect for that resolution. 5870 is a bit overkill considering you need to spend £100 more for about the same performance.

As wuyanxu said, HD 5850 better suited to that res.

5870 will last 3-4 years at that rez 5850 won't.

So it's your call on that one

sure the 5870 has a better chance at lasting at that rez for 3-4 years, but the performance increase doesn't justify the price. if the 5850 struggles with something at that rez, the 5870 won't be that much prettier/playable. i'd go 5850.

    I've got a 1680x1050 Dell 2007WFP and I'm currently using a HD4870 1GB. It hasn't broken a sweat yet.

If you're upgrading from a similar model, I would save your money for 12 - 18 months when it'll start showing signs of age.

Edit: oh you're on an 8800GTX - okay ignore me and get the 5850 :p

Depending on your budget - curveball. A 5770 will cope with res for most everything aside from Crysis and is a damn site cheaper. But it's up to you. The 5870 is most definitely a waste of money if you're not changing your monitor.

If you'll be keeping it for 3-4 years without any likelihood of an upgrade I'd go for the 5870 - it's overkill for now (which means you can just whack all the settings up to max for a while), but once newer games start coming out it should mean you won't struggle for performance for a long time yet.
