Hi all, looking for a replacement cooler for my AMD Phenom II 965. The previous one, an Arctic Cooling Freezer7, commited suicide one morning. As a temporary solution, I have attached a new 80mm(!) fan on it, using genuine Royal Mail rubber bands - the red colour option. I am currently leaning towards Thermaltake's Frio, or maybe the be quiet! Dark Rock Advanced (despite it not being that great for AMD systems). My main concern is whether my RAM modules will fit or not, they are Corsair's Detonators, quite tall. Motherboard is ASUS M4A89GTD PRO, and case is Fractal Design Define R2 (this should be fine). Any advice welcome, particularly from owners of the M4A89GTD Thanks in advance, Adam
I would air on the side of caution with AMD in general if your memory heatsinks are tall. The slots are always quite close and the cooler can only be orientated one way usually.
http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cooling/2009/05/17/titan-fenrir-ttcnk85tz-cou-cooler/1 I've got one of those on my x4 965 BE @ 3.8 and it runs at around 30/32 idle and 38 load Unless its 30 degrees outside like last week was then add 2-4 more degrees onto those figures
True, but the Freezer7 didn't last long (just over a year). I plan to keep the pc for another 3-5 years, hopefully not having to go through this again. Most other CPU coolers have standardised fans (like the Frio's 120mm etc), which means one can always just replace the fan, should it die. However, the Freezer7's 92mm fan incorporates the brackets that attach it to the heatsink, thus preventing you from using any other standard fans.. :-( @Bindibadgi: thanks, sometimes I feel the IT industry should work closer to make sure we needn't have to worry about any such compatibility issues, which seem too common. Maybe mobo layouts need a rethink.. I've looked at images online and it appears the way the Frio attaches on the mobo suggests a different orientation compared to the Freezer7 (blowing air towards the back, as opposed to towards the top). This makes me think it may be more compatible with the RAMs?
Sounds good, though not sure the Titan Fenrir is being sold anymore? In any case, the Frio is supposed to be the ultimate in air-cooling, say the experts!
Personally I would go for one of these they wont block the ram slots and are probably the best your going to get for air cooling I always use them myself http://www.scan.co.uk/products/ther...atpipes-for-socket-775-1156-1366-am2-am3-cpus
You may get away with using the dominators if you install those first then the cooler, dont think the dominators are as high as the vengeance ram ?
+1, I was also going to recommend one of Thermalright's coolers, as they are quite narrow, thus making it much less likely to interfere with RAM slots, and they perform quite well.
what about 1 of these? i have 1 in my sysm=tem aand it hasn't disapointed me http://www.scan.co.uk/products/antec-kuhler-h2o-620-cpu-watercooler-lga775-1155-1156-1366-am2-2plus-am3-3plus
Indeed, I think they're a few mm shorter.. Thanks for the suggestions guys, much appreciated Must confess I hadn't noticed Thermalright's cooler before. And Antec's compact 'watercooling' option may be worth considering.
