I been contemplating building a 1U rackmount folding PC i2600k, Z68 M/B, 4 or 8gb RAM , high efficiency cpu 200/300w and fan cooled running Linux Is it possible, I was thinking it would be good, 20 servers would = 3000w Thankoos
It's possible, but it's going to be LOUD! and EXPENSIVE. 1U Chassis have 40mm fans which scream to shift enough air. You should be okay with a 300W PSU (can someone confirm?) 20 Servers would be 6000W minimum. That's 6hwh/h Say an average of 14pence per kwh. Hourly Energy x Hours in a day. 6kwh x 24 = 144kwh a day. At average 14p/kwh electricity costs a days running cost would be - £20.16p 24/7/365 Cost would be - £7358.40 a year. And BTW, for folding, you don't need anywhere near 8GB of ram. 4GB will be more than enough.
20 2600k Servers have you come into money, a lot of money My Ram usage is quite high on BIGADV units under windows, but 4gb should do 20 servers would be extremely loud hell 20 desktops builds would be loud if they were in the same room 300w seems enough for a stock chip
Currently using a 2600k overclocked at 4.5Ghz running windows 7 with 4Gb of RAM. Only using 2.68Gb right now whilst doing bigadv and power draw is 150W. So a 300W PSU would be in the 50% efficiency sweet spot. But as stated, 1U would loud as feck. 2U possibly?
I wish, I'd love to run 20 1u servers of 2600k folding, would be something like 500k+ ppd but the price to run it would cost too much without sponsorship lol Mainly juust a though atm and for something a bit different with custom folding pcs
