I thought this was going to be called Northern Islands from recent rumours (it was Southern islands from earlier rumors Aswell).

It is Northern Islands not Southern (SI will be AMD's HD7xxx next year) and NI wont be out on the 12th ...more like on or just after the 18th.

However, that's still not long to go! :D

Wasn't Northen Island supposed to be the 6xxx series but it actually became the 5xxx series? So the 6xxx series is Southern Islands in which case.

too confusing...... just wait for official press release.

on a related note, hope this one is a minor update, and won't make my 5870 an antique.

I doubt it would be anything ground-breaking, the 5000-series haven't really been out that long.

At least I hope so since I just ordered myself a nice, fat Gigabyte GTX 480 with matching EK fullcover waterblock :D

Well I'll watch this, but I only upgrade every other generation, so my 5970 will have to do for this time around ;)

Well , I haven't really noticed any quantum leaps in GFX field for last couple of years. Mostly it's been nvidia rebadging old tech.

if you don't count rebrands, nVidia card do feel they last longer: G80 over 2 years, GT200 2 years and GF100 will also be around 2 years when their next architecture hits.

i think im going to hold on to the 5870 until next nVidia architecture.

I thought Northern Islands was the full fat core, but they couldn't get the 32nm process working so they had to rehash it into 40nm and lop off some parts which became Southern Islands.

Yes, that's right except the net rumour mill got the names the wrong way round... it's the NI (half way house) out next month, SI next year.

That same rumour mill has performance descending across the board to the next price point down... eg the 6770 will be atleast 5850 performance at the the old 5770 price point. Infact, rumour has that the 6770 will have enough of a performance boost over the 5850 (+10%) to relegate the 460 1gb to a 'has been'.

I'm sure that's Ati fanboi wishful thinking ...sort of:eyebrow:

I read that due to fab problems Nothern Islands was delayd some thing to due with the smaller manufacturing process and there for they "invented" southern Islands with is NI using current fab process and a slightly simpler design.
