Hi been out of the computer building scene for a while, so got a few newbie questions. my 860 has just died on me so need a new computer. Been looking at my options, and it looks like 6600k or 5820k. A 5820k build looks to be about £100 more expensive is it worth it? I am going to be using my PC for gaming. Option 1 5820k msi x99s sli plus 16gb ddr4 4 channel corsair vengeance 2666mhz noctua D15 £651 Option 2 6600k asus rog hero 16gb dual ddr4 corsair vengeance 2666mhz noctua D15 £540 Also what is this M.2 SSD thing? And what is a sensible ram speed these days? Thanks Bagman
If you're only gaming then I don't think you'll see any benefit from going X99. RAM speed is pretty much irrelevant I think, especially if you're using a separate GPU, but if the faster stuff is only a tiny bit more expensive then you're probably just as well to go for it.
M2 is generally for M2 SSDs which are basically stripped down SSDs, without a case, that slot straight into your motherboard.
M2 with a SATA interface is exactly how Parge described it. Just a stripped down SSD, which will give you similar speeds and performance. THe benefit being it will reduce cables in the case as save some space. M2 PCIE interface is something different! It can take upto 4 lanes of your PCIE bus and use it for the SSD, meaning you can get some crazzzzy speeds going on I have a SM951 which boast a read speed of 2100MB/s... But these cost more and from my exp' need airflow over them to keep the temps down a little. Be careful to check which interface(s) your motherboards M2 supports and neither of them will work in the differing interface.
