Hi guys, its time for a new worklog from me. This one is not a PC case though I am changing the form of an MSTECH external hard drive case for a CE modding competition at we-mod-it.com. Of course i want to share the progres with you guys too. It called BUCCANEER BAY and the name is the game. Its all about the bounty huntung Buccaneers. Bay because instead of just caseing the external drive anew, I am going to utilise the 12 volts connection to power up not just a HDD, but a CD drive, a USB hub, some leds, a card reader and whatever else i can jam pack into this case. As the name suggests, its all about piratic buccaneer elements. I will keep some of them classically nostalgic while others will be honest to the philosophy but very modern. It will be basically a treasure chest of a different kind and will even have a cut throut knife in it as a buccaneer off setter which will later be used as a letter opener. so here are the first pics. BUCCANEER BAY, i will integrate the hdd case in such a way that it acts as the inner base and carrier for small devices. thats because i am planning on utilizing the 12v. 2A transformer feed as an active power up for not just an external hdd, but also an active usb 3.0 hub, a card reader, an external dvd burner and a few leds. i will most probably be moving the power insert to the longside instead of the short side, which be be the back later on. what i want to attain is a single BUCCANEER BAY for all the mentioned components without having them all lying around stuck into each other on the table. I will cut out the top of the case and use it as a base for the hdd on top. the rest will be the case for all the wiring and ugly stuff. so the hdd will actualy be mounted outside the case. in other words less volume, but it that can do more. the hdd case is the same form as a standard pc case, 6 sided and boringly a simple block. that simply has to change, bearing in mind that this build must hopefully end up as a piece of bounty pirate treasure. so after having said all that, it must of course be beautified. a healthy soul needs a healthy body. i will pack the whole device constellation into the BUCCANEER BAY (which is indeed the bay for everything) and give it that BUCCANEER PIRATE, SEA WORTHY TREASURE CHEST CUT THROAT KICK ASS look. it will be made of wood, aluminium, plexi and steel. as usual, i am not building a replica of anything, its my own design, so i have a lot of freedom in the conceptual realization of my idea. all elementry hinting a direction, not making true copies of something. the first design ideas will be just elementary not compulsary and i will post them as soon as i have integrated some of them into what i want them to look like http://we-mod-it.com/index.php?page...66&h=a3f383e8090227ded5fa59dbd9a20c4d48f3edcb more to come
and here is a little more seeing as one of the sides will become the back of this build, i have to to cut out new oles for the usb and power connectors.in the visible parts of the MS-TECH HDD case time to plank the lid and i want this chrome emblem to shine through the top flooded with light from underneath in the lid later on. in order to be able to utilise a piece of the case again i will use the left overs from it as an underlay for the chrome part as contrast to the chrome am not using a machine to cut out the plank look, they must be a bit imperfect like old wooden chests are, so its all draw and cutting by hand from here. I really love your wooden builds, they always pack so much detail in (maybe a little too much in some cases but that personal preference). The one big issue though has always been the shear volume of unsized pictures as it made it really tough to view on mobile. But this is no more! Really looking forward to seeing how this turns out, it's always an adventure watching one of these grow.
Yes ! another build from you I must say, when it comes to actual hand crafting and work you're probably the best modder I've ever known. Coming from a family of craftsmen I really respect your work. ARRRRG !
hi maki, glad you like it, yes i hope the Picture volume size is not an issue any more. and yes, i am a slave to Details. i love delving deeply into design. of course always depending on the concept.
wow AlienwareAndy, thanks mate for that great compliment. i do my best and cant but help producing what i do. the real reward is remarks like yours and confirms that i have done something right. thx. what type of craftsmen does your Family have.
so everyone, here are some more pictures of Progress on the Bucanneer Bay. the backlight test the cutout for the later LED i decided to make my own hinges instead opf jsut buying and mounting ready made ones. this way i can make em Buccaneer style.
here are the first crossbone Mounts for sideskulls they will be sanded still. lid holder and magnet clasp the inner lid cover will be illuminated from inside and it needs this inner cover too.of course loyal to the style. to match that lid inner cover i also made this top bottom cover which will hold the BUCCANEER CUT-THROAT KNIFE and the led power on-allpower on switsched and pwr LED.
to match that lid inner cover i also made this top bottom cover which will hold the BUCCANEER CUT-THROAT KNIFE and the led power on-allpower on switsched and pwr LED. rammed in some eyelets for the holding screws later on. have desided to cover the inner bottom knife Holding plate with this felt, so as not to scratch the knife when removing or placing it in. more to come..
thx mate, glad you like it, here are some more pics so here is the progress of todays modding session. have milled the front usb port in and also mounted a selfmade lid clasp. i took out the magnet clasps because they are hence not needed anymore. the first wood stain is done and tomorrow i will start the airbrush. apart from that i have mounted askull plate underneath to protect the hard disk. the black parts will look like cast iron when they are finished. i decided to make not just my own hinges but als instead of easily buying aclasp, i made my own. the two Switches are for all on off and only leds off. the led is for power on the front usb port and then it was time to braak it down and get some paint on it.
and then it was time to braak it down and get some paint on it. after sanding it i didnt like this classic Wood Color, so i changed my plans. seeing as i had changed my Color scheme is sanded of the darker palisander stain Abit to get it ready for the airbrush ink stain. regular stain has fine particles in it and is hence no good for the airbrush, Clogs up. thats why i use normal Printer ink. you can mix your own colrs as wished, just takes longer to dry./SIZE] airbrushing all the lighter parts. the next chore was to make the wooden strips look like forged iron ones. i did this by just patting the end of my brush in 3 differenet Colors of paint randomly to make it look like that old hammered iron orey type of metal look. came out quite good. here some before and after comparisons before after because this initially allm started out based upon an MS-tech case, and i had some parts of it left over, i wanted to integrate them somehow, here is the buccaneer knife handle i changed. after 2 coats of clear glaze. so it was then time for the build up, in the next post..
