Scratch Build – In Progress TRON Lightcycle - MotY 3rd Place!

This is my entry into Cooler Master's case mod competition, scratch build category.



Been working in Sketchup for the last week, building a mockup of the lightcycle suitable for housing a full ATX system with watercooling. It ended up being 40" long, but relatively short. As for the design, I didn't want to make a spot-on replica of the bike, so I went with my layered acrylic method, with just a few skinned areas around the wheels and top. This allows me to hide more components inside as well. Anyway, on with the mockups:









Upon removing some layers, you can see the initial motherboard placement and other components.


To give you a better idea of size, I placed a Cooler Master Cosmos case next to it.

I'm planning something special for the front radiator, more on that later. ;-)

So that's the basic plan, I'll be adding more detail as I go along. Comments, suggestions, criticisms are always welcome!

 

This could be interesting, I'll be watching keenly. Also looking at the pics it's going to be big enough for a small child to ride it.

Bod, I've noticed you're always using Sketch Up for you mods. The free version or Pro? And why not something a little more 'precise' like AutoCAD or SolidWorks?



(and I like the fact the radiator looks like a little like a brain )

 

I'm using the free version of Sketchup 8. I've been trying to learn Solidworks, but it's been slow. I can really move fast in Sketchup, so I always end up just using it for pre-vis and quick mockups. One of these days, I'll start an actual project in SW and force my way through it. Maybe Roboduck can give me some pointers.

 

I'm definately following this build.
The word AWESOME now has a new benchmark.

 

Solidworks = WIN, AutoCrap = Crap...

Dont waste your time with a piece of software like AutoCAD. Solidworks is beyond superior and well worth learning if your in the industry or even a hobbyist like a modder. The potential to create with a program as flexible as Solidworks is nearly endless once you learn the functions. There are loads of tutorials and how-to's online in countless locations. Force yourself to learn it and you will wonder why you ever spent so much time in SketchUp.

But all that aside, your models look great and I'm very excited to see this get underway!

 

Couldn't agree more. I have to learn it for my degree course, but I so much prefer using Ashlar Vellum's Cobalt. I have to submit them via AutoCAD, so now just do them in Cobalt and export them through.

 

From a fabrication standpoint, this case looks really complicating to build! I wish you the best! Are you going to be doing alot of milling of the pieces to get the curves correct or "how you want them to look"? Or are you sanding and filing alot of the pieces? Lastly, I believe you did mention acrylic, how much of your build is going to be in acrylic? Look forward to watching this build, Rock ON.

 

Oh man, I hate "Project Logs" that aren't, I want to see progress.

I thought concepts weren't yet in the build phase living over in the Modding forum?

But...

It's got a lot of potential to look really epic, although I doubt a design based on a movie "prop" is going to win the competition for you - no matter how man awesomes it's got.

But boy, will it turn some heads!
