Other Good podcasts and audiobooks

Hi all,

I'm spending roughly 10 hours a week travelling to work and back and I'm finding myself quickly getting bored of my music collection.

So I thought about possibly podcasts and audio-books, but I've no experience with either really.

Can anyone point me towards some good podcasts (games, technology or comedy) or audio-books (preferably sci-fi or fantasy).

The old XFM archives of The Ricky Gervais show. It's not everybody's cup of tea, personally I wasn't a fan of Gervais until hearing these, some very funny bits and it's nothing heavy or dull for that matter, very cheery! I found XFM was best from series 2 onwards.

Adam & Joe! They're not on t'radio at the moment but there you can easily get hold of their XFM and 6Music podcasts.

They've certainly caused me to giggle like a loon in public on numerous occasions.

/edit - oh, and if you're looking for audiobooks then you can't go wrong with the Discworld series.

bbc.co.uk/podcasts for a variety of interesting podcasts, I listen to factual/educational stuff from the BBC, news, finance/money markets and occasionally music.

I like the Bungie Podcast, and listen to it quite often.

I've been enjoying driving to work listening to Milton Jones' radio shows.
A quick search on Google tells you were they can be 'acquired' from.

 

I like nothing better than to listen to a good audio book, have listened to quite a bit of material and with I will pass on one JEM of an audio book.

This is a must listen to, really it sucks you in and is superb.

+1 for the Milton Jones radio shows. I also listen to the Friday night comedy podcast from radio 4 and of course the bit-tech podcasts.

 

You might want to try a free lecture series from Ohio State University. A young guy called Richard Pogge gave two courses a couple of years ago, and each lecture (over 80 in all) is available on the net;

• A161 An Introduction to Solar System Astronomy
• A162 Introduction to Stars, Galaxies, & the Universe

A161 is pretty easy, and would be great for kids. A162 gets pretty complicated (Herzsprung-Russell diagrams and the like)

They are the best astronomy podcasts I've heard. His enthusiasm for his subject is infectious.

 

For technology, there's TWiT, and then there's everything else.

 

I'm in the same situation, I've listened to all of the audiobooks below

Discworld - I love all of Sir Terry Pratchetts books (Strata, Dark side of the Sun, Nation and Good Omens are also quite good)
The Night's Dawn Trilogy - Peter F Hamilton (Very Very good, science fiction)
The Dark Tower (series) - Stephen King ( I loved this series, fantasy)
The Hunger Games Trilogy - Suzanne Collins (quite good/ok)
The Wheel of Time Saga - James Oliver Rigney (Currently on the second book in this one, so far so good)
The Black Magician Trilogy - Trudi Canavan (I enjoyed these, fantasy)
Old Kingdom (book series) - Garth Nix (A fun listen)

So far I haven't found them, but I am keeping an eye out, it is a series I want to go through.

Ive read alot of the Riftwar Universe and would love to see them move to audiobook.

I second the suggestion of the Adam & Joe podcasts, their show has been on Saturday morning since 2007 so there's a lot of material if you can find it.

Not so good if you're self conscious of laughing to yourself in crowded trains or buses.

If your after something a little more cerebral but still easy going maybe the Mayo and Kermode film review on 5 live would hit the mark?

 

For some comedy, the BBC R4 Friday night comedy is a good podcast...

On a similar note, the BBC audio hitchikers guide to the galaxy is an absolute must. all 5 seasons

The BBC adaptation of Lord of the rings is good too.

Other BBC adaptions i've enjoyed recently are Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency by douglas adams and The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, by John le Carré.

yes! ive been listrening to these too and they really are great...makes you want to learn more and its really inspiring to know the level of genius some people have attained!

 

Well TWit and Revison3 work pretty well for me as well as Podiobooks.

I love Scott Sigler, Jake Bible, Phil Rossi, J.C.Hutchins, Bill DeSmedt..... You'll find a lot to listen to there.

 

I listen to TheModBrothers podcasts while driving. Lots of interesting information revolving around modding if thats your thing.

Otherwise it's audiobooks for me, Hitchhikers guide being my favorite
