    Trying to hook my brother up with a gaming PC. Just something to he can play a few games nothing special. I have a Q6600 at home so im just going to throw that into the mix and get a 775 board. Also i have a antec 900 from old build that im going to put it in.

    Does anybody have any suggestions for the board and RAM. Think i was going to go for a gtx460 for the GPU not sure about the PSU just something with enough grunt to get this working.

    Think im looking at around 240 to get the lot so im going to go bargin hunting on the market place.

    Any suggestions or help would be great thanks

    William

    If buying new, the Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2L is a good cheap S775 board. It is currently on Scan's Today Only page for £29.99. Alternatively, spending a few extra quid on a DDR3 board will help if buying new RAM as DDR3 is actually cheaper than DDR2. A good cheap S775 board is the Gigabyte GA-G41MT-D3 which is also on Scan's today Only page for £35.99. Both of these will overclock a Q6600 with ease although they are not specialist "overclocking" boards, just easy to overclock if that makes sense.

    I see your post in the marketplace, that is a very good idea as the cheaper you can get m/b, PSU (a decent one I hope), the more you can spend on a GPU - this is where the best performance will come from.

    If buying new, here are some options:

    Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2L - £29.99
    4GB (2x2GB) Corsair TwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400 (800) 5-5-5-18 - £50.39
    500W Silverstone SST-ST50F-ES Strider, 80 PLUS - £43.19
    500Gb Western Digital WD5000AAKX Caviar Blue - £25.19
    1GB MSI GTX 460 OC - £113.99
    Total = £262.75

    Gigabyte GA-G41MT-D3 - £35.99
    4GB (2x2GB) Corsair XMS3 Classic DDR3 PC3-12800 (1600) CAS 9-9-9-24 - £35.99
    500W Silverstone SST-ST50F-ES Strider, 80 PLUS - £43.19
    500Gb Western Digital WD5000AAKX Caviar Blue - £25.19
    1GB MSI GTX 460 OC - £113.99
    Total = £254.35

    All prices from Scan's Today Only page right now.

    As you can see, a DDR3 m/b & RAM is cheaper.

    Do you need to get a copy of Windows 7 as well? What about a DVD drive? That will add to the cost and second hand will be cheaper.

    No i have a few copies of Windows thats no issue. Think the DDR3 makes sense imo. yeh towards the end of my 775 boards life i had my Q6600 on a nice 0.5Ghz increase so think will try for something around the same. I had an arctic Pro7 rev 2 so ill bang one of those in as well.
    Think that second bundle you built there looks about right. Eh yeh ill have alook round the market place see if i can get an old DVD drive on there maybe a cooler of some kind.

    Thanks for the help.

    Just a few notes though.

    Ebuyer are doing a 450 watt Antec PSU for only 29 pounds ATM which will be enough.

    A motherboard like the Asus P5k3/P5Q should go for about 35-40 pounds if you can find one.

    Also it's worth putting up a wanted thread for DDR3 memory.
    If you are going for a DDR3 board you can use the older 1.9 volt memory and as this isn't compatiable with 1556 or 1555 and most socket 775 uses DR2 you may be able to pick some up at a good price.

    If you have an Arctic cooler 7 already it's fine but if you don't the coolermaster Hyper 212 plus is a better buy, albeit slightly more expensive.

    No worries, have a look around and see if there are any decent S775 board for sale as well, assuming you don't want to go new.

    From what I have seen though, you will be struggling to get anything decent for anything less than £25-£35 inc postage so it might be worth a new one for the warranty?

    The more you save on the m/b, RAM, PSU etc, the more you can spend on the graphics card which will give you the biggest bang for buck.
