i have to write an analytical essay on a poets biography and a analysis of one of their poems. i know nothing about poetry, except for reading "where the sidewalk ends" in 3rd grade.

i'm looking for someone who wouldn't be a total bore to read about, like a Hunter S Thompson of the poetry world. does anyone know of an interesting poet?

Why not write about Shel Silverstein? A very talented musician, playwright, and poet who, despite an entire life's worth of creativity, is probably best known for the seemingly nonsensical children's books. Not a bad legacy for a guy who was once a leading cartoonist for Playboy.

I can almost guarantee everyone else will choose one of the bog standard poets. Go outside the box and look into Silverstein's life.

    That would be Bukowski
& if you want a poem that's easy to analyse I'd go with "Bluebird"

Edgar Allan Poe is one hardcore ************. They don't know what exactly killed him but it could be one/many of these: alcohol, brain congestion, cholera, drugs, heart disease, rabies, suicide, tuberculosis, and other agents. Plus some other hardcore gangbangin' guy drinks with his dead homies on Poes grave for Poes birthday. If you want to be a man you'll write about Poe.

I agree, he was an awesome poet, just go read some of his poems and decide for yourself.

Or, go with a Barnabe Googe :p

I'll third Poe, one of my favorite writers in general ever. What I've read about some of his shenanigans also makes it worth it.

If you want a lot to write about, Byron.

I can't stand his poetry, nor how he appears to have been as a person, but he did sufficient to make for a decent length study/essay/whatever.

I understand Poe is quite interesting, but I can't vouch for there being a lot there to write a waffle-free essay about. I'd be surprised if there wasn't, but I don't know Poe.

I like Wilfred Owen myself, he wrote quite poignant stuff on WW1.
