After the experiance that i had with building Hill 7.9 i saw a beautiful deskbuild deskbuild.

A crossdesk from red harbinger. It cost me a few dayes to read the complete buildlog of a few friends.
Then i thought "yes i like it and i want one" . I had multiple reasons why i wanted to build a deskbuild:
    - I needed a desk to work on "sinds i was band upstairs with my modding stuf";
    - The crossdesk was to small for what i want "have to design my own";
    - Had the idee that i can do it "without welding";
    - Thought that i can make a cheaper one for the same price "i tell you later if this is tru:

I am rewriting my already started buildlog here on bit-tech and want to share all what hapend during the build off this massive piece.

    Specs:

    Desk:
    Material 2 mm thick aluminium Size 2000 x 900 x 255. Powdercoated in Ral 9005 Black Matt

    Under the desk:
    - two Caselabs Magnum pedestels

    Under the pedestels:
2 custom made blocks with soft casters.

    Drawing of the build

The first job was the making of blocks under the desk.

The panels are made of 22mm of mdf.

I already made the drawing for the plan.
Lets see if it work out the right way.

I had to saw out half of the panel to make place for the pedestel.

I saw out the panel and the rest of the work was for the file.

Lets see if the Caselabs Magnum Pedestel fit in to the panel.

Together with the browse gleu and som screws i mounted the first block together.
    Not bad at all.

    Front view.

Next time i wil put the softcasters under it.

The making of the second block is finished.

It is time to mount the caster on them. It makes the blockes easier to move this way.

Yes i need more room to work on the desk.
I have just moved in this room with all my modding stuf and builds.

I am going to saw the old desk into a small working table and move it.

The old desk is moved to the left.
On top of the blocks you see a 2 meter bord "this big my desk is going to be".

    Still need more space.

Clean desk policy "at the moment".

Next time "more work on the blocks under the desk".

I am home early and before my wife is home i want to start with the painting job of the blocks.

The paint that i use is on a water base "so no smelling".

The drying of the layers is going fast "cant complain about that".

The next day i am agin early because i got the materials for the desk deliverd at the firestation.
So i took a few hours off and went home.

It is moving time again. Panels behind the blocks.

After dinner it is time to go on with the blocks.

A fresh layer of dark black "also on a water basis" is put on.

I can not do the sides before i put in the 2K filler.

Filler in "quick drying filler" after a hour i sand the surface down.

A last layer for this evening and i am a happy man.

    Not bad he!

    Ill be back

Ye i am back "that is quick".
Ha ha no that is because i am already further then my updates.

Time to make the base of the desk.
For this i use a 2mm thick aluminium plate size 2000 x 900 because that is going to be the size of my desk. I need the room.

I already figgerd it out how to do the job. If its going to work out the way i think "i can not tell you yet".

So big plates on two wooden frames because i only have two hands and got no monkey in the room to help me.

I already let the factory bend the big profiles. You can not do this without a machine.
First thing to do is taking measurements how much i have to saw off from the length.

I work from side to side and got a tool made for the angles.

Working on the sides with a small file.

After making the long panel the right size drild a few holes for putting in som pressnuts M3.

The other panels i make the same way.

More work on the raw desk.

The structure of the desk is finsihed for so far.

    How does it look!

It got the shape of a desk "thats good".

Because it is still a big box i have to make a cut in the middle so my legs fit under it.

And because it is still one 2mm panel i want to make it a bit stiffer "avoid bending when i put the jigsaw in".

Extra reinforcing strips are popt on to the bottom.

It is time for som serious sawing. "i hope it is still in one piece when i finish with it".

I finished this parts. Now i have to put the middle console in. Ahum yes nice.

I pre mounted the console .

    How does it look like!

    :thumb:

    Thats all for today.

More work have to be don on the back panel.

Sawing out the space for the io-panel in the back.
Off cours the cut is made after checking and checking of the measurements. This because i did not order spare parts.

Time for som filing and sanding and drilling.

More holes have to be made "grommet holes".

I made a few sawing malls for this job. It is easier to make them the right size.

And off cours checking the measurements afterwards.

    How does it look. !

Not bad after a few hours of work.

Time to mount that panel back in.

It is time to make the insertpanels.

I already have a few 2mm black coated panels in storage.
With the use of the motherboard trayes from Caselabs i am going to make the insertpanels.
At least i am going to try.

Before i put the jigsaw in to the material i measure the space under the edge of the motherboard tray.
Measurements on the protectionfilm of the insertpanel.

    Time for som sawing.

    A few bolds as standoffs.

Lets see how it looks with the panel in.

I just notice that i changed one of the updates around. I shout don the insertpanel update before the cutting of the back panel. LOL

Grab a motherboard and lets see how it looks.

Woking on the second insertpanel goos faster because i know almost where all the grommetholes must com.

    Insertpanels are in.
    This job is finished.

    Yes it hapens again.

It is time to make the openings for the 560 radiators at the back of the desk.
For this i also made a mall .

After sticking the mall on the back of the desk i folow the edges of the paper.

Yes i love my dremel. But this is going to take som time before the 2mm thick plate com out the desk.

At last the space for the 560 radiators are cut out. And the edges are smooth.

Yes i am a happy man again.

I have seen backs of deskbuild with a raster in it.
    I want that too.
Before i can do this i have to measure the space tht i have and make a cutting mall again.
I dont know how it is going to look "if i finish the job".

I am a patient man so lets whait and see.

With a piece of tape i stick the mall to the back of the case. Under the mall is tape.
I think i folowed the edges with a pen.

First two rows finished. So this is going to cost me "what one week". :wallbash:

Stil had the power to move on this evening.

Not bad for a FNG in the modding world.

Off cours this job wasn't finished this evening. It coast me two more evenings before i end up with this.

Feeling like some hit me with a stick at my back.

    Ye baby job don. Pffffff

Making the 120mm fanholes in the desk.

We also use a mall for this job.

After drilling the mounting holes for the 120 mm fans it was time to draw the circles on the desk and saw it out wit a jigsaw. The rest of the job is for the file.

I did the same thing at the left side of the desk "the gaming side".

    Top trim for the desk.

    I orderd a few meters of aluminum angle pieces 40 x 20 x 3mm.
Because there is already a edge on the top of the desk i have to see how many cm i have to file of from the oudsite to let the top trim match up with the inside led profile.

For this i use a tool.
Now i know how much i have to file off.

Mounting the trim with countersink screws in the top.
The angle piece is about 15mm outside the desk.

I do the same with all the other profiles.
If you take your time it wil fit perfectly.

All the profiles are mounted.

I received new material for making mounting brackets for the baydrives.

The profile is to long but that is no problem for the jigsaw.

    I have 2 x 1000 mm profile and i need 8 mounting brackets\ plates.

First four plates are made ready to be workt on.

Tommorow is sunday and i have a 24 hour shift at the fire station and if there are no alarm i can work a little bit on these plates.

I already drild many holes in them so the only thing i have to do is filing out the rest until i have a sliding opening.

It is sunday afternoon and time to do som filing.
After a few hours working with the keufile i think the are ready for test fitting.

Ahum "i find them a bit to long so i wil saw off about 1,5 cm"

I also made a extra modification on the plates for mounting the Aquero. I needed more space for connecting the cables to the aquero . So i saw out a strip in the top and made a few grommet holes in the sides.

The bracket wil be mounted to the insertpanel where i put in a pressnut under the bracket.

The view on both sides are be the same.

Because the top trim is pointing 19mm inside the desk i have a problem with puting in the insertpanel.
I need to make a modification. Yes i wil saw the panel in two pieces and mount a extra support strip to it.

This is the bottom piece where the baydrives be placed on. You see the holes with the pressnuts at the top.

    Top and bottom panel meeting.

I wil do the same on the left side. This way i dont have scratches in the powdercoating when i mount the parts in.

I received again a package with profiles.
This time to make a mounting area for my 2 x 1200 Thermaltake Toughpower Platinum psu's.

In many deskbuild i see bunches of wores in the back "yes i know that the back is for the wiring" .
Stil got the feeling to do it different. :D

I am going to make a box with openings on 3 sides. 2 opening inwards the blocks. And one to the back as a access point.

2 long plates and 2 u-shape profile wil form the base of the box.
For mounting the box together i use 3mm countersink rivids.

Yes and again one panel mounted.

Time for the top u-shap profile.

For the top ionly needed 3 mounting u-shape plates to mount the box under the desk.

Time for drilling som holes for mounting the box to the bottom of the desk.

Holding the box against the bottom of the desk allows me to drill the mountings holes tru the bottom of the desk and the box.

Yes more work i like it :wallbash:

Making a access in the psu box.

I draw a few pen lines on the protectiontape where to saw out the panels.

I also markt the positions for the grommet holes in the top mounting points.

I add a few angle pieces to the box for mounting it against the blocks right and left.
Also are the grommet holes drild and filed to the right shape.

Further have i made a cover for the front of the box. The cover is for:
    - mounting the box in the front to the block (mdf) ;
    - covering the surface between box and block.

Altho i have two aluminium plates to cover the box i am thinking about making a acrylic door in it.

The box is pre mounted on the desk.

It is time to make the access point at the blocks right and left from the psu box.

I already put tape on the block, markt the hole to be saw out and drild 4 holes for the jigsaw.

    Hoeaaaaaa one more hole :D

So more jobs, filing, sanding and re painting. :D

And a hole at the left side.

The box is mounted under the desk and more grommet holes are made.

A view from below. The distance under the desk to the box is about 70 cm.
