i've got some ram with heatsink fins extending about 3/4" above the top of the ram, and now i want to put it under a low profile heatsink. problem is the heatsinks are glued to the ram. is there any way to remove the heatsinks without ripping the ram chips off, or do i just have to trim them down while they're attached?

Use a heatgun, but do not exceed 100 C.

Dump the entire RAM DIMM in 92%+ Alcohol. That's worked for me in most cases as most of them are using tape/pads. They come off in ~30 minutes after soaking.

Why should the heat gun sound scary? Hairdryer will work as well. Heat them up and gently pull them off. I've done it on hundreds of RAM modules in the past and never damaged one.

And why - no offence intended - you clearly have no idea what temeratures electronic components are capable of withstanding whilst powered down. SMT components and the boards they are mounted on are subjected to high temperatures when they are pre heated prior to being gas convection soldered at somewhere in the region of 600-650°F (315-350°C) and you're worried about 75°C. Your worry is at best, a little ill placed mate.

Completely agree. Yes, the RAM chips/PCB are capable to being heated to quite high temps. And yes I'm paranoid  . Seriously. I can't stand anything above 68-70C. I know my CPU,etc can withstand above 75C but again, I like to keep everything cool. Trying to do phase change soon, for below ambient temps :D.

I get scared when mine goes above 65 when folding! Once I forgot to turn my fans up and my GPUs hit 100 :(
