    Right then!

Its been long talked about but according to NordicHardware AMD are due to officially reveal the 7xxx series this coming Monday in London.

With the move to 28nm, it looks like the 7970 may launch with a 1Ghz Core clock and 2048 Shaders.

Speculated launch date for all parts except the 4000+ shader 7990 is January.

I for one am liking the look of the shared memory and C++ like support. This could make programming them much easier than the current APIs, bringing about a lot more software utilising the graphics card, and the faster gaming..

    2048 shaders @ 1GHz core.... YES PLEASE!

Just what I need for Portrait Eyefinity in a single card.

Hopefully the power consumption will be kept in check as well.

Looks like the initial releases with be die shrink versions of the 6000 series, the GCN stuff (79** series) coming later (rumours of a showing at the January CES)

so they are finally moving to a new architecture?

GPGPU require a more general purpose shader unit, this is why 4 cluster shader unit is being revised so soon after release on 6900 cards. also notice how their tessellation unit will be split into smaller units, very similar to nvidia's Fermi architecture.

i'll be waiting for the very top end Kepler card due out this time next year, it's a shame they are taking their sweet time with high-end GPU's. graphics cards are long term investment, so a future-proof architecture is key. nVidia's 6600GT, G80 and Fermi have proofed they can handle test of time. compared to x800's lack of SM3, Cypress's lack of tessellation performance.

I wonder though. How well utilized all this power will have. After all there really is no impetus for game developers to even use such power.

only 79xx has the new architecture. i'll be waiting for GK104 kepler.... the top end is GK112 which probably going to see store shelves in 2013. im not waiting that long lol

    GK110 is only GK104x2..... and i hate multi-GPU-in-a-board solution....

Be aware that we may well see new consoles in Q4 2012 or shortly after. When this happens it will massively drive up the power requirements for games. Think BF3 as a starting point.

We all complain about how console graphics are holding back the games we play, but the flipside of this is that we can buy inexpensive GPUs and they will still run everything in max.

It will be interesting to see how the 7970 pans out against the GTX 670 (assuming its not going up against the 680). I have a feeling that with AMDs lead on Nvidia, they may be able to compete very aggressively in the price performance stakes.

This looks like the 5870 vs 480 wars all over again, so could be interesting...

If the 7870 is anywhere near as impressive as the 5870 was and still damn well is, I'm in there like a shot.

My 5870 still beats a 560Ti for BF3 on high and it's a stunning card, short of my 800D, it's the best piece of kit I've ever bought.

I just hope tessellation and anti-aliasing performance goes up. With the 5xxx and 6xxx it was pretty easy to give points to Nvidia for leading in these areas. Definitely looking to buy the 7970 on release, should be good for another two years just like my current 5870.

I'd like great OGL performance please, insteadof shelling out for FireGL or Quattro cards and their unlocked OGL drivers. :(

Has anyone heard anymore news about this?

I was about to pull the trigger on either a GTX570 or GTX580. Would wait if amd7970 available to buy in January. But not interested in waiting for paper launches.
