Let's say you have an unlimited budget - you just found a cache of legal tender, you won the lottery, whatever. What sort of build would you make? My initial idea would be a quad-SLI GTX 690 based build, of course...
I think for me, its not about the hardware as such, as im waiting for new innovative technology, i can afford the current hardware already, even if its 16 quad sli etc. So moving on, it would have to be things like full titanium and carbon fibre materials and all about the case and what i could do to that and have unlimited resources and cnc machines and workshop time, being able to retire and have the time to make it and so on. But nice idea for a thread.
If money was no object? Fully kitted out server cabinet filled with as many CPUs, RAM and GPUs as possible, with a meaty 10GbE switch at the top. Would be pretty fast to crack hashes and WPA keys on...
...Did I ever tell you you're my best friend? Anyway, I've always been curious - have Xeons been tested in a gaming rig? I thought they were just used for servers and the like...
1x: http://www.supermicro.nl/products/motherboard/Xeon/C600/X9QR7-TF_.cfm 4x: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/processor-comparison/processor-specifications.html?proc=64596 And then fill it with 2400Mhz memory and quad way watercooling. Then fold till it breaks!
ummmm lets see.... titan mobo (quad cpu) w/ 4 8-core xeon cpus, modified to have 8 ramsticks 4 each cpu, then modified to hold four geforce 690's in sli(hopfully we will see 790's someday... dreams.. dreams. i cant even begin to descibe case w/out an avalanche of pics. oh, and 5 3dvision 2 led backlit displays, three in surround, 2 parallel with line of sight, slightly lower than the other three, one swinging back on an arm so you can step out of the raised seat(whole setup is on a stand 1 1/2ft off ground. Oh, and deafening surround sound. in a room cooled to at most 55 degrees farenheit, just so the rig can go further below zero with a type of fluorinert that wont eat away at plasticizers.and 1tb ssd's. id need to keep the bill-gates-level pay for the electricity bill tho. if only i had that money......... not to mention the desk is also an aquariom. dunno why i threw that in. maybe for the cat to be entertained? i think of strange things at times. the tank would be warmed tho so the fishies dont die and my very own server, in the same tank as the other copmuter. id have to switch to linux for the os to even know what to do with all thaat raw bone-crushingly blazing fast power. and these fans would circulate the fluorinert thru the loop-shaped tank with sub-zero chilled radiators cooling the fluid and also acting as turbulance deadeners: http://www.sanyodenki.eu/Counter-Rot...20x120x76.html mabie a few other tidbits.... the fans woul have chrome-colored nosecones so they looked like jet turbines. and the blades would be metallic to of course. with loads of orange and purple leds... gotta stop now before i go too overboard and try to sart buying stuff with nonexistant money.
U3011's and a couple of amazing keyboards. I couldn't care less about what is in the tower as long as it works and plays games well!
I think we wouldnt want anything thats too perfect, as whatever we buy, we would want to take apart to change and modify it. Maybe hire someone to mod the stuff for us, why we drink beer and stuff.
This. Unless you're folding, as Tarka said, there's no point in putting a zillion graphics cards in the same system. Given unlimited money, I'd get two 30" monitors and whatever horsepower I'd need to run games on one of them... probably a single 680 or 7970.
