    The Prologue
About 18 months ago my pc died and I went almost a year without a PC. I don't know how I managed it, but fortunately my job allowed extensive internet usage for 'investigative purposes' and it wasn't monitored much, so I was free to browse about and I always had my phone and xbox for company. But then with the imending release of BF3 I had to get back into the world of real gaming.

I tried to get one from overclockers on finance which fell through when my manager secondment was prematurley ended (too many late nights lookin at builds, not enough time sleeping. :duh:), so me and my brother set about getting me up and running with some old bits of his and a couple of ebay purchases, the result of which was Betsy; Q6600 GO, P5k-e, 4Gb 800MHz DDR2 and a GTX 460 wrapped up in an Antec P182. Not amazing, but enough to run BF3 on high@1280x1024. I was happy:D

    I WAS happy.....:worried:

I'd read through some build logs in BT without ever actually signing up and fancied doing some watercooling. So while trying to sort my new PC with overclockers and being bored at work, I deigned a loop in Word (yes [IMG]) for my lovely new bits that never came.

Now as luck would have it I ended up with a P182 and a new job, so could actually go through with it and build this thing, but if I were to go into all the trouble of putting in a loop, I wanted, neh, needed some more firepwoer to justify it, but still couldn't afford a brand new rig AND the parts ofr the loop.

But my current system wasn't THAT bad and I quite liked the idea of keeping it old school, hense the codename RAt MoD, but the official title wont be revealed until a little later in the build.:p

So slowly but surely I bought the odd bit off Ebay and the marketplace and my current rig now sits proudly in my sig, along with my first foray into watercooling with a modded Antec Kuhler 620.

    Part 1: In the beginning

So, this build is mostly a case mod on the P182 I'm currently using and putting in a watercooling loop loosely based on the design in the prologue. But I will be attempting to make my own blocks for the mobo, CPU and GPU.:worried:

    Hardware
    QX9650
    ASUS Striker II NSE Extreme
    Gigabyte GTX 480 SuperOverclock
    4GB Kingston HyperX DDR3 1600MHz
    150GB WD Raptor HDD
    1050W Enermax Revolution 85+

All the hardware being used in this mod is now at least 3 generations old. Old, but by no means incapable. 480's are still absolute beasts, especially when treated to an aftermarket cooler or put on water and with DDR3 on board and a CPU which Bloody Pete used to have sitting @4GHz 24/7, it might surprise a few of you.

    Cooling
With older parts comes more heat, like a mafia boss who's nearing the end of his reign and a million vendettas against him. The GTX 480 especially is renowned for it's secondary function as a fan assisted electric heater. To counteract this I'll be using 3x 240mm Alphacool NexXxoS ST30 Full Copper radiators, 2 Laing DDC-1T+ Ultra 18W pumps, an XSPC Laing DDC Dual Bay reservoir and a host of fans from Xigmatec's Crystal CLF Series.

    Case
    Shhhhh! It's a secret!;)

    And so to the modding!

I'd Oringially wanted to use MagiCool SLIM DUAL 240 Elegant Plexi series rads, as seen in Asouters DEEP THOUGHT however when they arrived they were in a sorry state and so back they went. Aquatuning were excellent in their response to the problem. It was actually a god send as it gave me a whole new twist on the project design :D

What's that you say? the ST30's are covered in black paint? Why yes they are! But not for long......:naughty: Thar be gold in them thar rads!

Being a lazy sod, I went for good 'ol Niotromors paint remover, which should in theory allow me to just polish the rads after the paint has been taken off and avoid endless sanding of finer and finer grits.

    But remeber kids, safety first!
But seriously, I got just a faint whiff of it through the mask and i would not want to be playing with it without the gear on.

Notromors is quite a thick sticky gel and not at all like a thought it'd be.

Add one coat by 'dappling it onto the pain surface and leave for 10 mins. It really stressed that you shouldn't applying it with a painting style brush stroke and considering the potency of the stuff, I wasn't about to argue. Especially not with a leaflet.

After 10mins there was some slight bubbling in a couple of places, so decided to really lather it up for the second coat.

Looks like it's been sucked off by slimer!

I return 40 mins later to the most incredible sight
    [IMG]

And after a few gentle scrapes and wipes
    [IMG]

Success! Got pretty much all the treated area without any hassle at all:D

That's all I had time for tonight, but be sure to come back for the next episode Crap fans. Same Crap time. Same Crap channel.

That's the wrong kind of mask for paint stripper. I bet you got a nasty headache after that. You also got lucky that they didn't use any body filler.
-Should be fun to read a log by a fellow troll.:D

Me too :D It's brilliant. It just lifts the paint right off the metal and will make finishing a whole lot easier than sanding it off.

Thanks mate. It feels good to have finally started :) having seen the finish underneath, I'm not sure whether I'll do anything further to it or polish it up like duncan goodhew's head.

You mean the full on hazmat one's? I've got a suit with a sealed brathing aperatus comin but couldn't wait;-) I did have a bit of a headache the next day, but did a side panel on each of 3 rads last night and am fine. I'm doin it in the shed with the door open and just dab it on and leave while it does it's thing.

I did an antique bed with that stuff and nearly killed myself. I bought a respirator right after that.

Who do I call about a defective zombie? I've got a moaner in my stealth squad and it's really throwing their mojo off.

Is that the series 3 model? We did have some quality control promblems with them where their vocal chords weren't removed. Email maintenance@mzainc.de with your details and I'll get an engineer out to do the job. For the inconvenience I'll send some of our new series 5 nighthawks with infra red retinal transplants.

What have I got myself into!

A very quick short update. I did some more paint stripping on Friday night, starting off the other 2 rads as the first trial run was such a scucess :) After seeing that the copper chamber was well finished, I wanted to have a look at the steel side panels. Nitrodeath hooooo!

After the removal and a good rinse with the hose to wash the nitrodeath away.
They're not too shabby at all and once fully stripped i'll give them a quick sand, brushing lengthways to give them a grained look.

But wait, what's this? Some of the paint has come off the copper channels, but they don't look like copper!?:worried:
Fortunately after a quick scrape i found they are copper and just plastered in solder, but it'll be a right pain in the nether regions to get it all off:duh: So glad I didn't have to try and RMA them, Warrenty void vs not as described = lengthy dispute. Happy with the evenings work I went to bed dreaming of bright shiney radiators :D

However, it seems i did a little more damage to my wrist when i fell on it the previous weekend than previously thought and it absolutely killed when I woke up Saturday. Doing anymore would have to wait:waah: It's Feeling much better now though (especially with some diclofenac;)) so will be back on it tomorrow all being well.

So stay tuned Crap fans. Same Crap time, same Crap channel.

Thanks mate. I was really apprehensive about stripping them down and whether I'd be able to get the finish I want, but the more paint I take off the more I'm loving it! :D Although i still wish i had the money for these beauties from coolgate

    :jawdrop::jawdrop::jawdrop:

I managed to get the other side panels done and made a start on the in/out chambers last night, but the paint seems a little more stubborn on those chambers and will require a second go. I've got Friday off so hopefully should be finished by the weekend :)

I am VERY accident prone but had managed to stay injury free for aaages. Then Bob goes and leaves a finger on the floor and down I go.:duh:

Well i guess my build will be steampunk-ish, but without the sole aim of it being a steampunk build. One thing's for sure, there will be lots of metal porn!:D

Time for Plan B (not the cockney twart variety)

Had the day off today and not too much of a hangover from last night's work do, so go to work on finishing the rads. I'd made a start on the outlet chambers earlier in the week, but the paint on those seemed to be a lot more firmly stuck on. There was a fair bit left after the first go with Nitrodeath
    [IMG]

Today I gave them a second go but there was still the odd bit left, so I gave it a scrub with some wire wool dipped in Nitrodeath and that did the trick. after that I did the 2 reamining chambers and the odd bit here and there which hadn't shifted previously. It was a bit of a pain at times, especially with those big thick gloves on, but the results are definitely worth it

Now just the fins to go and I had a genius, foolproof, quick and easy way to do them:idea: Slather them in Nitrodeath, leave for it to work it's devilish spell, then introduce them to my little friend:naughty:

Unfortunately my foolproof plan wasn't. Due to the small gaps in between the fins and the thickness of the Nitromoors, it couldn't dry and work it's magic. Not only did it hardly remove any of the paint from the fins, it also bent some when i went to close with the nozzle.
This was when i got a bit carried away after discovering it was powerful enough to remove the paint off the channels.

So some ups, some downs, but fortunately the damage was done to a side that wont be seen. I'll try some thinner paint stripper, which i can leave the rads to soak in. And if that fails, then........:waah:

Until next time Crapfans. Same Crap time, same crap channel.

With lot of patience,a thin screw driver and gently force you unbend them.Did it a lot of times when restoring car heat cores for use to PC cooling.

:thumb: Rads turned out nice, with some polishing will look great, leaving the fins black is not bad, consider it.Or you can use some copper effect paint and see how it looks on the fins only.

By the way, steampunk is my second best after post apocalyptic or the opposite hmmm :naughty: .I'll keep an eye on this.

You might try some brake fluid as a stripper for the fins. Sure did eat the powdercoat of my brake calipers on my mustang.

I sloshed mine around in concrete cleaner in a shallow pan, with a little love with a toothbrush to finish. -none of that environmentally-friendly crap... the bad stuff.
