I can only wish for a orange box type release with HL3 l4d3, Portal 3 and TF3.

    that would be amazing.

they'd have to do something better then that though to make the wait worth while.

Hopefully they will make Source DX11 compatible rather than the abysmal DX9 garbage it currently is.

Id also like to see the rest of the story, since there was supposed to be another episode.

i wouldn't read to much in to this, im guessing it costs money to tradmark, so someone at valve is probably just being resourceful

Apparently, they have 3 months to use this trademark then they have a total of 5 renewals of 6 months to use it.

So within the next 2 years and 9 months!!!!!!!!

Remember that if someone else had been eyeing the TM for HL3, Valve could have snapped it up quickly to stop someone else using it - nothing more. That would explain not doing the same in the US.

I do believe that if they do not use the trademark in the EU during that period including the renewals, they will loose the right to that trademark.

So, we will see what happens when the first Steam Machines come out and whether it becomes their first exclusive. My gut feeling is they can't really do that, with them being such an open company. However, with the Linux game catalogue a little thin on the ground maybe they will go against their own ideals.

I to cant see HL3 being a Steam Machine exclusive, although i can see Valve either designing Source engine primarily for Linux or adding extras not available on Windows.
Maybe even going as far as Source 2 for Windows and Source 3 for Linux, with better graphics, or some other stuff to make Steam Machines a more tempting option.

I'd love to be able to find the interview/article online but I remember reading about Valve's decision to focus on making the Source engine multi-core efficient opposed to DX10 (this was just before the release of DX10). I expect that the Source engine 2 will be OpenGL. I'd be interested to know if they plan on using Mantle.

What's wrong with the current engine? I think it's aged unbelievably well for a DX9 based one.

Surely with their move towards Linux and away from Windows the new Source 2 engine will do away with Direct X all together anyways?

Source has done very well for an engine released in 2004 and it still has its place with certain titles but for something as flagship as HL3, it is likely to be a completely new engine. I do half hope though that Left 4 Dead 3 will come out on the new engine before HL3, that way they can get all (read: most) the issues out of the way.

Me too - HL2:Ep2 hardly looks dated at all imo.
