Hmm I might be able to help more this year.. might be sourcing a few blades, need a rack and power supply for them, and the know-how to set them up. All i want to do is fold with them! Assuming I win the auctions I will have: 2x HP BL20P Blade Server 2 X Intel Xeon 3.2 GHz G3 2gb ram 2x HP BL25P Blade Server 2 X AMD Opteron 2218 2.6 GHz 2gb ram 3x HP BL25P Blade Server 2 X AMD Opteron 252 2.6 GHz 2gb ram HP BL20P Blade Server 2 X Intel Xeon 3.6 GHz G2 2gb ram HP BL25P Blade Server 2 X AMD Opteron 285 2.6 GHz 4gb ram Also need to source HDD's? Currently the bids are around NZ$2 each.. hopefully nobody notices these auctions!
What OS will the blades be running? You'll get the best out of them by running the bigadv SMP client natively in Linux on anything that has 8 or more physical cores.
You'll need a P class enclosure, at least 1x 2.5" sas drive for each, 6-8 psu's & the switch module. Not a cheap purchase (I know I've got 3 enclosures full of blades I look after)
Was planning on some linux distro, not sure which yet. We'll see if the bids win. I also have a dual xenon E-atx board on it's way soon! (now to find a couple of skt 603 xenon's :/)
i meant xeons! Was half awake when I posted that after being up with the kids all night... anyone have a couple socket 603 xeons lying around? Going to install F@H on my Project Think: (Intel S875WP-1 Server Board, , Pentium4 3.0ghz HT, 1792mb Ram) later tonight I think..
# Sorry mate - I thought you knew I was the official historian of old workstation and server CPUs and motherboards. Anything you fancy/need?
I'll just see what cpu's my server boards take & get back to you. ION - all machines back up for the day, might be able to keep them running for most of the day next week as well.
The board is a Gigabyte GA-8IPXDR so socket 603 only :/ Supports "Dual Intel® Xeon™ Processors with 512KB L2 Cache (Socket 603/400MHz FSB/2.4GHz+) " If you have a couple that suit I'm happy to paypal you for them! (would be cool if you had the heatsink assemblies for them too!)
Okay - I'll have a look in my desk on Monday. Re payment, I shouldn't really accept anything as they're old engineering samples, but if you're ok to pay for the postage I'll happily donate them to a member of the folding team.
Cool. I won the auction for the Gigabyte Dual Xeon board ... NZ$10.50! (£4.86 or €5.35!) Now to find some registered DDR sticks and a distro of linux I can work with! (i'm a *nix n00b) I do appreciate it, Lizard! Happy to pay shipping!
