To come to common ground with the Mrs. on a naming scheme for your computers? I don't think it should be, but we've spent probably 2 days arguing about it. She didn't like that I had gone off half cocked and labeled the computers after characters and places from Beowulf (Beowulf, Herot, Healfene, Grendel, etc). Tried things from Norse mythology, no go. Greek mythology, no go. English mythological creatures, no go. Mythical dragons, no go. About the only two things she suggested were Harry Potter creatures/characters or the military alphabet (because she loves Doll House, not because she likes or know the military alphabet). *sigh* All my suggestions were labeled as "too Geeky, I don't know any of them". Well, other than Greek mythology which was just "too Geeky". Settled on naming them after birds. I might sneak Wyvern in there somewhere...because I just love saying Wyvern. Anyone else have any fun computer/network naming fights with you significant other?
I find it strange that your missus worries about the computer's name. Most women just refer to computers as "the box on the desk".
I wish. Probably my fault. I asked her what she wanted her computer named (it was just named Emily-PC before). Issue was I just put together a file server and she didn't really like it showing up as Z: \\healfdene Now w/ the question of naming her's up in the air...sigh That got an hour long conversation turned argument started right before bedtime night before last followed by a 20 minute phone conversation this afternoon to finaly resolve it. Sheesh.
I like the NATO alphabet. People naming computers is like people naming cars - it already has a name, which is written on the back in little silver letters. If you built your own computers, name them after the model of the case or something? Mine's on the network as "Lian_Li_V1000" just so everybody knows I'm shallow...
A networking class I took mentioned how naming of network places according to a theme can actually be an important decision and to be ready for it. My roommates and I have talked a bit about computer and hard drive names. My PC is named Blue, blue is my reserved color in my own color based naming scheme. In a network environment where users may have multiple devices it's useful to have a scheme with various subgroups. My color scheme allows me to use Blue, Azure and Sapphire for my devices. They're all shown as separate devices, but since they're all shades of blue I can tell they have the same user. Unfortunately, my roommates didn't want to go along with it.
To be honest, if you have a two day argument about computer names, the least of your worries should be the names... As for a naming scheme, Giving them "cool" names is useless, as you will sooner or later forget what's what. Lately I have resorted to logical names such as "Server" or "HTPC". It's boring, but it works.
All the machines at my workplace are named after alcoholic drinks. It's great. The last place I worked at even had a machine named after a porn star.
I just call mine "laptop" and "desktop". If i could justify more computers in the house i'd call those "server" and "htpc" Groundbreaking right?
I got yelled at by the parents when I called our new wireless network "Ravenholm".... no good reason for it
At my workplace the names consist of machine <class>,<country code>, <location code> and <ID>. It's really boring. Except for the computers we have "unofficcially" added, that is.
All of mine are named after Muse songs (big Muse fan ) My laptop is called Exogenesis, Project Muse is called Plug In Baby and my file server is called Hysteria. Even my phone has a Muse song title as its name on the network.
If my misses chose to fight me over something so silly i'd tell her i'd sell the dish washer, argument forgotten. I just use any name, Frank, Betty, John etc
Whilest complaining to my brother he shared a great story about a fellow sys admin at an old job. The guy named computers after aztec and mayan gods in the troublesome departments. Conversation the guy had late at night "How do you spell 'Huitzilopochtli'?" "Correctly." "You're mad that I woke you up at three this morning, aren't you?" "Not in the least. By the way, you have to ssh into tezcatlipoca to get to huitzilopochtli." Further conversation with my wife minutes ago and she has agreed to avian creatures. Pheonix for her computer and I can do whatever I want with the others, so long as they are names she knows (so far Wyvern, Dragon, Pegasus, Hippogryph, Gryphin and Sphinx have all been okayed).
