Morning all I've offered to build a budget PC for the in-laws to replace their ageing single core (!) machine. Any suggestions to improve upon the following (by improve I really mean reducing costs). It's just for internet browsing / office work. They have a 500GB HDD that I'll reuse as storage so a larger SSD isn't really necessary (they won't fill the 120GB for a very long time). Really I'd like to go for a cheaper 8 series motherboard but I don't have a CPU handy to update the BIOS to take a Haswell Refresh chip... I had considered the Pentium K and a cheapy motherboard as that'd probably knock about £50 off the total price but I'd need to read into that a bit more. I still need to check with them if they want to replace their monitor, keyboard and mouse or not but I thought I'd price up a total replacement for them. Case: CM Elite 334U £30.41 PSU: Corsair CX430 £36.52 Mobo: MSI H97M £59.96 CPU: i3-4170 £88.92 RAM: 8GB Corsair DDR3 £38.16 SSD: 120GB Kingston V300 £38.54 Monitor: Acer K242HLbd £93.89 Mouse + Keyboard: Microsoft Desktop 600 £20 Plus a copy of Windows for about £75 that brings the total to around £480. Any suggestions? Thanks George
For a basic internet browser, I think Shirty's HP that's he got in the marketplace would be more than up for the job. Specs: Windows® 10 Professional 64-bit (legally upgraded from Windows 7) Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E8500 (6M Cache, 3.16 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB) Seagate 500GB 7200rpm HDD 4GB DDR3 1,333 MHz Asus GeForce 210 1GB (new) Factor in the new monitor and KB & mouse, you should save around £280. Or, if you'd prefer something new, Dell have a Inspiron 3847 on their outlet for £306 + delivery. Specs: Processor: Intel® Core™ i3-4160 (Dual Core 3.6GHz 3MB w/HD4400 Graphics) Windows® 8.1 1 TB SATA III Hard Drive (7200RPM) 8 GB DDR3 Dual Channel 1600MHz Memory (2x4GB) Back Up Media Not Included Windows® 8.1 (64 Bit) English 16X DVD +/- RW Drive Dell Wireless-N 1705 + Bluetooth 4.0 Mini-Tower Chassis Dell USB Keyboard
If they are not gaming i'd replace the CPU with a Pentium G3258 (£51.54-scan), even at stock settings it is speedy enough for everyday browsing, word processing etc. And it has plenty of overclocking potential even with the stock intel heatsink. http://www.scan.co.uk/products/inte...-32ghz-clock-1100mhz-gpu-32x-ratio-cpu-retail
