Very interesting glimpse (vid) of yesteryear's technology on Mac's 25th anniversary. This is particularly true for those unfamiliar with running a computer without a hard drive. She tests it against a very slow laptop running XP.

I'm not much of a Mac person, but I'm sure there's loads to be found on it right about now. CNN had a picture of Wolf Blitzer, when he was very young, sitting with a Mac in the background. CNN wants viewers to send in vintage Mac photos with themselves in it.

I think it's a shame that she tested a Mac against a PC (running Windows), as I think the actual interesting content of this video will get lost in the Mac vs. PC debate (not helped by her making comments like "For now, I'm going to stick with my PC"), when clearly there is no meaningful comparison to be made between a 25 year old mac and a current PC. I'm surprised the beeb couldn't lay their hands on a Macbook Pro for this video, wouldn't that have made a lot more sense?

I bet there's a vid doing exactly as you say, but not being a Mac person I didn't bother looking. Maybe somebody will post a good versus match?

I think the video is just for fun rather to prove a point.
The video just says in reality that the old Mac was starting faster, but ti has nothing... you always need to feed it disks and everything is ultra light due to the limitation of the hardware.
Again, it's just a fun thing.

My laptop doesn't require floppy disks for every stupid application.

    Stupid Mac.

The comparison was between computers 25 years ago and computers now. That one is a Mac and one a PC laptop is kind of circumstantial. The interesting bit is that basically both have the same functionality for office apps, but have their relative strenghts and weaknesses (boot time vs. sophistication and internal HDD, for instance).

Of course, people can turn it into another PC vs. Mac fanboy whinefest, but that is not how it was intended.

Interesting... Considering its age that mac is in excellent shape....

I find it funny to compare the tech with today's... its not really a comparison of hardware just fun to watch... While windows loads a whole lot of stuff, the mac basically loads its kernel... and thats it.... :D

Yup, I used to do little animations with it. It was a simple little application builder (not really intended for animations), that was kind of fun to play with.

Actually, I think it didn't come until later if I'm not mistaken. I do know that it went through several versions and finally escaped to color from B/W.

Well it's been awhile, but it was definitely the BW version. Certainly I was either using a IIci or DuoDock, so yea it was much later.

    Oddly enough I did lol

That aside, like others have said here, the Mac she was using was faster at booting up because it had very little to load. I know it wasn't meant to be serious but it was quite an unfair comparison.

When I used Windows ME that booted faster than anything I have ever had before, should I use it ?! OF COURSE NOT! :)

But yeah, it wasn't serious, just a bit of fun to show Mac is 25 :)

edit: also yeah, I'd have tapped that! :D
