Hi all i currently have a 2500k but i'm looking to upgrade a ihave asus max IV-gene-z 1155socket, by budget will be about 300pound, it will be for folding and gaming (when i get time) any ideas on the 3770k ? Ross
Hi Ross2011 The 2500K is a very good processor. The 3770K is a better processor, the question is whether it is worth the cost to you. An alternative idea would be to wait 6 months and get a Haswell CPU (next generation). The Haswell chip will not fit the 1155 socket but you will have 6 months to save up for a new motherboard.
More likely around 9 months as haswell should be hitting sometime next summer Your only real upgrade cpu wise is a 3930k and a 2011 board but obviously your going to need more like 600 odd pound for that, I'd wait for haswell
Or hit 80 posts and then try and get a second hand 2600k on the market place for around £150 and put a big cooler on it, then run it at 5Ghz. Will take you from around 15k PPD to 30k PPD. It also helps if you have high speed memory for when folding I find, I use the samsung 22nm stuff, 2x4Gb dimms and run them at 1866MHz (9-9-9-27 1N) @ 1.40v. Some units I am chucking out almost 36k PPD but average 30k.
Hi Ross, as suggested in your other thread on the same topic, I'd recommend keeping the 2500k where it is, and building a secondary folding rig with the best second hand parts you can find for £300. As TaRkA suggests above, a cheap 2600k in a cheap mobo/case with the bare minimum extra expense will net you far more PPD than simply upgrading your 2500k would. Plus you'd be a proper hardcore folder having more than one rig doing the deed.
