News AMD's Project Quantum systems use Intel Core i7 CPUs

That's not a statement you want to send really. It basically says our cpu is either not fast enough or cool enough for the task at hand so we used Intel.

 

That's good, nice to see a company trying to be honestish.
If they had an amd cpu in there - I wouldn't look twice at the finished product.
Since they're using an intel one, it tells me they're serious about making the best.

 

The strong rumour is Fiji doesn't support HDMI 2 which is the format all the 4K TV's use (none have display port). So they design a specialist "living room" box and tout 4K, only you can't plug it into the TV and do anything more then 30hz. If true that's a major facepalm...

 

They don't. They also don't have DP 1.3 to achieve it with the dual-mode thing (not too sure about that, I'm still using regular old HDMI for my 1080p monitors!

 

I don't see the problem with AMD turning into Apple and just bundling the strongest hardware into a product rather than spending any more money in a market where it might not be able to compete. The console money won't last forever and until any refresh, has probably already been allocated to cover losses (correct me if I'm wrong).

The lack of 4K support's the bigger concern, hopefully these really are just prototypes that won't have marketing and manufacturing spend wasted on them.

 

actually i think this was pretty big of them. I love my fx-8350, but there is no way i'd be putting it in a micro-itx case. f that, and since the focus of the apu's is more towards graphics than cpu, it's only a good choice when pairing a low-mid gpu. Using a high end gpu in that kind of case with amd's products would be a subpar choice, and it's awesome that amd is willing to admit that.

 

I wouldn't agree that it's particularly 'big' of them to do this. For starters although there wasn't much in the way of effort made to cover it up, it's hardly an element of this new platform that they were upfront about right off the bat either. AMD has essentially had no choice but to admit that it is using an Intel chip and platform.

Secondly, they expect their loyal customers to create systems using CPUs that they, themselves, would not use when presented with a choice. How is that good?

To the person who suggested that AMD is Apple-like in this matter by ditching their own hardware; they're not. Apple had a much broader portfolio than AMD does. AMD designs chips for OEMs to package and use. There's no way Quantum has the scope to become a high-volume mainstream product. And how would you feel if Quantum was using both Intel CPU and Nvidia GPU but still had the AMD branding? How much does something have to change before it isn't the thing it used to be.

I would also say though that in light of the recently KitGuru debacle that AMD as a company seems to be losing touch with gamer and enthusiast audience.

 

to number 2. micro-itx with a high performance graphics card specifically. low-mid i'd go amd over intel for the APUs. full tower, i'm fine with the fx. In this specific arrangement, the current amd product range is ineffective. They arent telling you to build this setup that almost no one would ever actually want to build on their own. If i make a lan pc, i want it light with mid performance(low profile card crossfired with an apu will do nicely). If i build a home pc i want it bulky with good airflow so i can use quiet fans.... honestly i would never build the kind of pc in this article, and i think most people wouldnt either.
