A Beginers guide to setting up mIRC
Step 1:: Get A Client
Can get one here. (1.14MB) Step 2:: Install And Set Up The Client Just install it the same way as most other apps. When you first run mIRC you will get a box like this:: ![]() Un tick the box then close the window. Then you get this:: ![]() Enter your name (use you Nick if you are funny about giving out your name), and email address. Now enter the nickname you want to have in the Nickname box, and a second one just incase the first is allready taken in the alternative box. ![]() Next we need to choose a server to connect to. Click the add button at the top. We get this loverly little box up:: ![]() Now we need to pick a server from this list. Try to choose one local to you, not that it matters, just helps the speed of things. Give it a name you can rember in the description box, and type its address in the "IRC Server" box. ![]() Hit add. Should be back to this screen now, with the server you just set in the second drop down menu. ![]() Next expand the connect part on the options menu on the left, then pick options. tick the "connect on start up" and "reconnect on disconnection" boxes. untick the "popup connect dialog on startup" box. ![]() Click back on connect. ![]() Hit "Connect to IRC Server", and wait untill it has finished logging you on to the server. After a while you will get this box. ![]() Untick "pop up folder on connect" Click add again. You will get this window ![]() In the channel box type #bit-tech Leave the password box blank Type "Bit-Tech Chat" in the description box Tick "Join channel on connect" ![]() Hit ok, then hit the join button halfway down the window ![]() Enjoy you stay. Step 3:: Talk. (mIRC should go stright to Bit-Tech Chat next time you start it up.)

thanks a lot! i'd gotten mIRC thinking how great it would be to talk to a lot of people i know from certain channels without having to go to the website and using it's chat applet...
but then i had no idea how to use it! very nice indeed.

Well you could always just hit F1 and look in the help file
or do "/quote help" and the server will spit back a load of commands.Also for a kick ass network try irc.xnet.org ![]() heh heh |

Great guide, one little error though:
mIRC is the client, IRC is the protocol, you can't get "a mIRC client", you just get "mIRC", or "an IRC client"

yeah, how do you get irc to keep the server and all the settings in trillian, I can get connected but if I close out trillian it resets my irc settings.

I dont really use IRC all that often, so I dont feel like having a whole seperate program for it. that and I like trillian. Its convenient once you work out all the settings an stuff.

Can someone explain how to setup Mirc with an ADSL Router. I just can't get the thing to connect.
Thanks

the IRC in Trillian sucks. i have Trillian Pro and i have used both mIRC and Trillian's IRC and i can tell you easly not to use the Trillian IRC. I am using Trillian right now and i love it so dont think that im bashing it. im just bashing the IRC.

IRC is winnville to be perfectly honest. I spend more time there than in any forums. With practice and experimentation you can do very spinkee things with it like aliases and logging all conversations.
Trillians blows farm yard animals in abundance when compared to stand alone applications. Windows Messanger + mIRC is all you'll ever need

trillian and mIRC is all you need ![]() nnscript is a decent all round script too, easy to setup and stuff, and makes everything look better
