Overheating issue.

I've recently put together a PC.

The specs are:

Pentium 4 2.8ghz Prescott
Zalman Flower heatsink + 120mm fan
MSI 848P Neo-V Mainboard
512mb DDR Ram (Micron Technology Cas 3 at 200mhz)
Geforce 4 Ti4200 64mb
120gb Maxtor Diamondmax +9 SATA Hdd

Now, at idle, my cpu is at 75ēc and hits 89ēc when playing Counter-Strike: Source, the system doesn't crash, but hl2.exe unexpectidly quits.

There is obviously a problem here, the 120mm fan is runnig at 7v as are the two fans next to the CPU. There is also an 80mm fan blowing in from the front.

Any ideas? The CPU voltage is at default.

F*** me! Just a little hot, try reseating the cooler with some AS5. also if you touch the HS (for more than 5s) is it really hot ? It could just be a sensor error...

Yeah, I've touched the heatsink, and it didn't feel that hot at all. My G4 runs at 57c and touching the heatsink on that hurts.

Its only just been put together though, less than a week. I didn't even know it was overheating untill last night, when I installed MBM5 and saw the temperatures!

Although, if I turn the fans to 12v, everything goes down to around 55c, but its very, very noisey. But, with a 120mm fan on it, it shouldn't need to be running at full wack, should it?

I seem to remember something about MSI being pretty bad at temp reporting.
Otherwise, like fr4nk said, a reseat is the best idea.

Reseat the sink. I doubt it's a temp probe problem, they're usually out by a few degrees, but not by 30+.

Wasn't there a little app somewhere that told you if P4's were doing the thermal throttling thing? If you found that you'd know what was going on instantly.

That's LGA, right??

You've not got the contact right. LGA is a sheer absoulte ******* to get right. There's no in between you either nail it with a perfect contact and get 40C or get nearly nuclear. That's why I went for this:

My theory is that people just dont make good contact, because since using this Ive never had problems with Prescott temps, even my dual core.

I'll have a look into the throttling thing, thanks krikkit

Edit:

How ironic, as soon as I'd posted that, the fire alarms went off

Heheh, ironic indeed. Sounds definitely like a seating issue; my friend's Pentium D was running at 80° Celsius the other day; turns out the heatsink was completely blocked with dust. (Dumb ignorant users and a PITA uber prideful paren t not letting people of non vietnamese descent look at it )

I just noticed that you have a MSI mobo and that I remember you overclocking this chip, though it's a long shot, when I had my X2 on my old MSI mobo after a few months of having it OCed the temp sensors went mad, it reported temps of 125C & -50C. maybe the same thing could be happening with you...

Hmmm very possible fr4nk, although now I'm running it at stock.

Doesn't explain why it goes down to 55c when I turn the fans up to full though.

This is the one.

If you think that this is caused by sensor miscalibration, it might be worth checking MSI's site for any updates to the BIOS with fixes listed in the notes. I'd definitely reseat that heatsink, though

Ok, I've re-seated the heatsink, same problems.

Also, I'm running the latest bios.

Hmm

Did you clean off the existing thermal paste and apply a fresh application?

Did you try the app that hitman posted to? That'd tell us what's what.

Are the temps as reported by BIOS or by MBM? MBM can throw up extrememly weird results if not set up correctly for your mobo (anything from -50 to +127C).

Both BIOS and MBM5. Also, its not throttling at all, what temp do prescotts throttle at?

Well below 80 or whatever it was saying, so it's a BIOS/reporting problem. If the CPU was at that temp it would've throttled by now tbh.

[edit] After reading up, it doesn't generally throttle properly until about 85+, so did you test it idle or under load? [/edit]

Well, under load as I played linage 2 for a few hours to get it going. Came back from lineage 2 and it was at 90degC.

The program didn't report any throttling. I think I'm just going to leave it, its deffinately reporting the wrong temperature, if it WAS at 90degC, I'm very sure something would've gone pop or at least the game would've crashed.

Perhaps, perhaps not, that article seems to say that you don't really see a performance diff. right up until it throttles...
