Look at VHS vs. Beta and the popularity of DVD.

As I've maintained for years, you want to know what player to buy next? Look at what porn companies are promoting.

(The link to this thread from the news item needs fixing!)

This is amusing and probably has more than a grain of truth. Personally I'll be basing my console decisions on what games are available, and then buying a seperate player if need be.

And, erm, some of us are more interested in Eichi Publishing and Soft On Demand than Vivid Video or Digital Playground...

Playboy are to the porn industry as McDonalds are to Fillet Steak, it'll be the movement of hardcore pornography which defines the format.

Actually, the porn industry has long been an early adopter and driver of technology. Like it or not, porn made te internet what it is today, porn was a major player in the early days of the VCR, and porn will continue to be a driving force for tech. That said, I'm not sure HD orn will make much of a difference, but if it gets people to buy HD systems and creates demand for HD operability on computers, this is a good thing. The only caution I have to offer is that like everything else, the porn industry is changing. The internet allowed producers to reach a far more massive audience through a discreet distribution channel, but it also has lowered the bar for new talent to get into the field without going through a major production company. With the internet, anyone can be a porn star and probably make a few bucks, and this is changing the face of the industry. Obviously this has t have somthing to do with them pushing HD formats as it is a more traditional revenue stream for the big players that is more difficult for small players and amateurs to compete in. My point is that the porn industry as a whole is changing and so watching what the big players do may not be as reliable an indicator of the future as it once was.

I don't think video formats will have a huge effect on which consoles people buy, sure it might give them a reason to buy one over the other, but consoles are a gaming system. Games are the most important thing for consoles, and the way to shift the most units is to have the most, and best, exclusive titles.

Porn decides all electronic wars.

Watch which physics engine they adopt for their next gen "games", and we'll see if Aegia, Microsoft, or Havok come out on top, and if this whole physics card deal could be seriously considerable for the price.

I heard on the radio yestersay that the recent numbers indicate the porn industry at $57 billion. To put is into perspective, the US makes up for the greatest share, at $12 billion. To put it into further perspective, Hollywood is estimated at $10 billion. Yes, porn outstrips Hollywood by $2 billion. The organizations that track such things estimated that the American porn industry produces 60 new movies per day.

I can only echo the sentiments raised here. Look at porn (well, ok, look at the porn industry) and follow the leader.

Wheeling a 42" TV from the living room in to the bog is hardly discrete is it (no, I dont own a PSP)

Like people have said the Porn industry is huge and they are always the first people to adopt new technology, so what they use will have some influence on this format war.

Sex sells a lot of stuff wether it be directly or indirectly, theres no escaping it

What's new, a man's lust for a woman is the sole driving force of our civilization. There is nothing more primal, or universal across all cultures and continents. Is there anything that is worth more than the love of a beautiful woman. lol even if it is a lil digital lovin. Its like sexual crack.
