Nice Article

What about How To Be A Complete B*****d, I used to play it on my friends Amstrad in ye old days.

Quote:
In the game, you play the part of Ade, wandering around a yuppie house party, making yourself as unpopular as humanly possible in the shortest time. Berilliant! Make a mess, throw up, smash things, put sneezing powder up girlies noses, you know the sort of thing, eh readers? But don't open the umbrella you'll find in the umbrella stand, 'cos as everybody knows that's VERY BAD LUCK! And it'd be just your bad luck to be turned into a gas cooker if you do it! Hah hah!

That's the latest mod for Oblivion. "Oblivion: make your self pretty". Contains everything a girl(or experimental guy) needs to impress the local nord population.

My suspicions were aroused when I was asked to punch pink leaves from a falling tree.
Sakura (cherry blossom) petals have almost a religious and intimately cultural significance in Japan.

The lift boxes thing is reminisent of the "strike a sword for 1000 days and you will reach enlightenment" or similar. Basically you do the same move with your Katana 100 times a day for 1000 days and your muscles will retain memory of the movements and become used to the endurance. I suppose they tried to converse that to the game though: It's oh so very Japanese.

Anyone one have any news about Shenume 3 (+1&2) which are meant to be released as the final trilogy on the 360? #3 (chapters 11-15??) were already written and destined for the DC then Sega stopped making it and it was not resurrected until they committed to the 360 sometime last year.

Ryan - you never heard of Manic Miner?
Miner Willy goes down a twisted abandoned mine to steal all the treasure. Eventually he escapes with the loot.
The Sequel is when he is a rich man and buys a huge mansion and has a party. His maid/wife won't let him sleep after the party untill he has cleaned up. Oh what was it called? Oh yeah Jet Set Willy. Not quite as bizarre as you thought then (silly yes)

Oh and it WAS possible to complete without cheating - that was a urban myth.

Loads of games are bizzare - especially on the early computers. Pssst! Pyjamarama, Chuckie Egg 2 (the one with the factory), the list goes on.

Ohhh little computer people!

Great article, I don't necessarily agree with the games on the list but it's a great break from the norm

hardwar has a pretty nuts story:

TITAN has been colinised by mining corporations a few centurys prior to the storys start. The mining corps then abandon titan and the people of titan are traped there with no means to go off the moon. (It's implyied for compercial reasons). You the intreped adventurer start reciving transmisions from aliens who have landed in a radiation scared crater of titan and a kind of race ensues between all the main fractions to get a trip on the alien space craft. You get on the alien space craft (helped by various nuts people like "psyco bob") and as it takes off old man lazlow who is an ex leader of one of the factions blows the whole moon up and you start firing your guns into the ceeling. compleatly nuts... (but an awsome game)

Hate to do this with a game I can't remember the name for - but what about the one on the PSP where you play the role of the planet and by tilting back and forth and by "bumping" you maneuver a bunch of little balls of goo (Not the mod, the sticky stuff,) around your Mario-esque world -

The storyline's internally consistent - so, no big sudden plot twists like some of those mentioned, but still VERY bizarre.

I really like this list. Thanks for the nostalgia. Who says games have to make sense to be fun?

I only wish Lucasarts was still making adventure games. There was I time when I struggled with these puzzles for days. My friends had the same games & we would compete to see who could finish them the fastest. Sadly I think it's the internet that killed these - It's just too easy to find a walkthrough for puzzle games now.

Anyway - YAY for Monkey Island (1,2...)

Tyinsar - I don't think it's the cheaters that killed the Adventure Game genre. I think it just had its time. Think about how old King's Quest, Space Quest etc are - they were massive in the 1980's and early 1990's. Then came FPS, and the ability to do really slick graphics. Sales of Adventure games nosedived and never recovered.

Unfortunately, market forces dictate that it's not "economically viable" to produce these games any more. I swear - someone should make a really good one using a GPL engine or something so that the limited number of people out there who WANT these games could buy it. The closest we have these days is stuff like The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

(By the way, if any of you haven't tried it and have a PSP - shame on you.... You can download a free demo that you can put on a memory stick. It's the most original game I've seen in a long long time........
