Words cannot express the hatred I have for the ignorant people who actually still maintain that any form of biometric ID card is a good idea.

They should be paying guys like that to test new security before they even think about going any further than prototype versions

this thing about biometric passports is a good idea, but it was badly implemented. it should have been encrypted.

No no, they can waste the money, as long as I get a cut.

yay for more british government incompetence

how on earth have they managed to blow 415million on something that amounts to a little tag thingy with some data on that wasnt encrypted?

im guessing too many things like a all expenses paid for conference for 50 busy bodies to decide something that didnt need deciding on, people who's job title is questionable just like their contribution to how england is run.

probably spent most of it on new office furniture or something

But it's not all bad: Grunwald says that despite his best efforts, he is unable to actually alter the data in any way without detection, only duplicate it.
So encryption would make no difference. One can make a faithful copy of digital information without any need to understand it. The written data has to stay the same to match the unchangeable RFID, which means the bad guy has to match the original physical description, a lot more awkward than just re-writing the description to match the bad guy.

Doesn't seem a big deal.

From mid-2005, the data will be in the form of a digitised photograph which will be matched with the identification document's chip.

Both the photo and the chip will have the digital signature of the UK Passport Service (UKPS).
