sinizterguy is an unknown quantity at this point
So when are they going to give out the coupons?

Im really looking to buy a laptop as soon as the Core2 Duo laptops are out - dont think the Vista coupons will be given out at that point - which hopefully will be by the end of August.

The main query is, with several different flavours promised/threatened, just which Vista will you get for free? Or rather, what are the coupon equivalents to the XP Home, MCE, or Pro you'll get on your new machine? Read the small print, grasshopper...

Should please most people though, I hate it when a new model comes out just after I've bought something.

I hope the PC manufacturers will be taking this into account properly, as in send new Vista restore sets (complete with drivers etc) out to customers.

I can just image the less tech savvy users being given an OEM Vista disc and told there you go thats Vista, its gonna lead to LOADS of extra work for those foriegn callcentres that can never do any better than read a script anyway.

Isn't this Vista where you frequently have to do a complete format to install it? So we're going to sell customers a computer, they take it home and use it for a few months, Vista becomes available, so they take their cupon to the store and get a free copy. Now they have to back up their data, format their hard drive and do a clean install of a new OS, fight their way through WGA verification, and re-install all their programs and data. That's a hell of a lot to ask of someone who bought a computer at Walmart

I am going to assume, that if you buy a machine preloaded with XP Pro, you'll get Vista Pro. XP Home = Vista Home. XP MCE = Vista MCE.

Vista Ultimate will probably be reserved for the enthusiast/high end segment, so it may be bundled with machines like Alienware/XPS, Falcon etc.

If only it were that simple, there is no outright home or MCE edition. This could get very confusing!

The versions:
  • Vista Business
  • Vista Enterprise
  • Vista Home Basic
  • Vista Home Premium
  • Vista Ultimate
  • Vista Starter

I wonder how the coupon would work, could I go out and buy the cheapest vista ready computer and then sell it on ebay for around the same price, mayby losing a few quid, then use my coupon for vista essentially getting it for very little? (sounds right in my head)

Is anyone else thinking this might end up like the HL2 coupon saga, with owners waiting ages for the product that was just around the corner?

what version of vista would the cupon be for? If i buy a gaming laptop that is vista ready to i get vista ultimate, if i buy a laptop for work do I get Vista Pro?

Why do i think every one will get vista basic and have to pay to upgrade?

I think it will be, XP Home - Vista Home Basic, XP Pro - Vista Home Premium (this is the one that i'm not sure about, will it be Home Premium or Ultimate), XP MCE - Vista Ultimate (I think Ultimate is the only version that ships with Media Center)

Would this mean for DIY PC builders that come next year if you bought a OEM copy of XP you'd get a coupon for Vista

I very much doubt that. The deal has been done with the big manufactures like Dell, Packard Bell, e-machine etc. You know all the pc's PC World and Comet etc sell to PC dummies.

I also think that they will only get coupons for the very basic Vista or even a cut down version. Now is it a full version or a trial??????? I bet trial.

This is aimed at PC dummies who shop at PC world etc and even the high priced PC's are pants and will be the minimum spec for Vista. I very much doubt that they give anything away for free other than a basic vista regardles the fact that you got XP pro.

Can you really think a PC world pc with XP PRO be able to handle Vista Ultimate. lol

It's official.
Quote:
Microsoft today announced its Express Upgrade to Windows Vista program. It provides a coupon--if you buy a PC from a participating vendor from October 26, 2006 through March 15, 2007--that will allow a buyer to upgrade a Windows XP PC to Windows Vista when it becomes available next year.
However, there seem to be more snags than a crocodile's gob.
Quote:
How much you'll have to pay for an upgrade ultimately will depend on where you buy your PC. As reported today by The Wall Street Journal Online, major OEM's will offer different pricing structures. For example, Hewlett-Packard will allow you to buy certain models and upgrade for free. Depending on the HP retailer, however, you may have to pay shipping and handling fees.

And the Journal reports that Dell will also allow you to upgrade by paying shipping and handling fees for systems using Windows XP Professional or Media Center editions. However, the Texas-based company plans to charge you $45 for an upgrade from Windows XP Home Edition to Windows Vista Home Basic.

Oddly enough XP Home and Vista Home Basic carry the same approximate prices: $200 new and $100 to upgrade.
