NOOOOOOOOOOOES!! Stop making Windows for idiots and telling me how to a) use my pc and b) "use it as a method to tell if my speakers are plugged in/turned on". I an not that retarded, thank you.

Time for the registry hacks to start methinks.

The Xbox and PS one's are fine since a) it's only ever at home, not everyone in your office every-single-morning you listen to 50 startup sounds or b) Xbox/PS take 3 seconds to boot and you can change the Xbox one if you edit the firmware iirc and I generally ad-block my TV til the game starts.

Windows sounds are OFF, all of them, forever. Don't hog my resources more than you need to, thank you.

I wouldn't want to be in a large room full of PC's with monitor speakers connected...

Doub't it will be long before someone figures out how to mod it though.

Another day at the microsoft support call centre:

Microsoft: Hello, how may I direct your call?
Customer: Hi, uh, how do I turn off that startup sound?
Microsoft: You can't.
Customer: WTF? Can I change it?
Microsoft: No, and a registry hack's a breech of the EULA.
Ex-Customer: I'm buying a Mac.

You won’t need to wait for your machine to startup, he says.
How long does a vista PC take to boot??

Now this is stupid. I wonder if the folks at MS think correctly. I don't want to pay $400 for an OS that annoys me with nasty sounds and have no posibility to turn them off.

Hang on - don't Macs have a startup sound you can't disable as well? All the Macs in my lab do...

...

Anyway, you can't turn the sound off? Well that's just bloody stupid. Pardon my French.

I think that on the pirated copyes of Vista someone will add an option for disabling the startup sound. I say this because in Romania the piracy rate among average PC users is very high.

Does anyone seriously think this won't be hacked out of Vista within days?

Ok it might require some reg hacking or a program download, but it's not going to be hard and I'm quite sure it'll be possible.

The main problem i have with windows sounds is that they always come out unbareably loud and distorted from my 5.1 speakers. Which, since they are shared with the media centre tend to be turned up pretty high. If this is in the final version it will put me off till its fixed.

How about just deleting the sound file, bet that'd fix it!

Well, unless the sound file is hard-coded into one of the kernel files, couldn't you just replace the sound file with a blank one?

I don't see how this is a problem since it's only a matter of weeks before someone comes up with some sort of hack to disable the start-up sound/music.

But don't you just find it on a level of arrogence that only Sony seems to achieve that they decided this for you?

Well said Bindi (although I don't subscribe to your fanatical regime of Sony-hatred ). What a bloody ridiculous idea.

We aren't children, don't treat us that way. If I want my PC to be silent, it damn-well will be until I tell it otherwise, not Microsoft.

Five letter word, starts with a C ends with an S and women get very offended by it. Are they just trying to pee people off?, bacause theres another reason to put put people off buying it.

With regards to people saying it will be hacked, yer i'm sure it will but TBH it shouldn't have to be

Note it's not really the startup sound, but the sound that plays before the login screen when the Windows logo with the aura fades in. Ah well... someone will find a way to get rid of it.
