Wasn't this previously discussed in the old thread about the startup sound?

Don't tell me they made an entire section of the control panel just for an on/off toggle. Surely the existing sounds section would have sufficed, with a new tab being close to over the top.

But, it's certainly a Good Thing. It just better let me use an MP3 for my startup sound, since the current wav-only is insane.

That would be awesome to have an mp3 as a startup music... When you _finally_ load into windows it'll just fade out...

Personally, I didn't see what the fuss was about in the first place...I generally don't turn my speakers on until I need them, so I wouldn't even hear the jingle anyway.

You'd only care about it if you couldn't fix it, but obviously rather a lot of frickin' people cared about it if microsoft actually changed something in their OS. So this is good news.

Just check the reaction in the old thread, saves many of us the effort of raising our arms. I predicted this would happen, as I stated in the old thread that Microsoft actually take notice of some of the comments made in the Vista feedback blogs, so it's nice to be assured they're still doing so .

You know, I just wish MS would have thought a little more about what the consumer really wanted to begin with instead of what MS wanted.

Thankfully, they do listen when we yell loud enough.

I think its mostly down to reactions like the one in the previous news story that got Microsoft to change their mind on this little badger.

My PC is plugged straight into my hifi's amp. The amp doesn't get turned off, and so when the computer's channel is selected, I do hear it on occasion. I have yet to pick up a device with a start-up sound and think "ooh! That's nice!"

(and I still like the looks on peoples' faces when I flick the PC on and get "Yo. She-b*tch. Let's go." Oh I love that line.)

...and because nobody else seems to have done it yet,

You can turn on your Vista machine, go eat some cereal, while your machine is cold booting and then this gentle sound will come out telling you that you can log in. You won’t need to wait for your machine to startup
...What? They're telling us we have to eat cereal now?

What would be so hard for any of us "hardcore" folks to -

Step#1 - Install Vista
Step#2 - Find said "start-up" sound
Step#3 - Replace with sound of choice
Step#4 - re-boot to a more personal sounding windows experience

The average person that only plays Yahoo games/checks e-mail are screwed...

but thats not our problem.

Well when you have a HTPC running MCE. And start the thing up in the midle of the night to watch some eh... 'downloaded series'.

9 of the 10 times it scared the **** out of me when it starts up, because i forgotten to turn down the volume when watching a movie during daytime. I watch movies with ridicalous loud volumes thats shakes the house (and proberly the neighbours house to) in full digital suround. I really like to feel a movie see...

So i can imagine that this thing would be very anyoing when i cant shut it off...

Turning off my speakers involves crawling under my desk to get at the subwoofer and the other cord out of the sound card goes to the stereo, so, yeah, this would be a pain in the arse. Of course, this is only a problem for those who actually intend to get Vista
