Another news site suggested that it would be specifically to take use of the ATi 2xCrossfire+1Physics system.

Couldn't stop laughing. I'm glad you mentioned that Nvidia will probably release their own version of it. I think I'd still prefer Ageia PhysX though; less of a hack, more of a real solution.

As for the board, here's hoping it performs as good as it looks.

Qu : why doesnt NVidia buy Ageia? surly they cant be that big, and then just impliment it into the GFX cards themselves?

also, whats with the lack of PCI slots now! do they not think people use them anymore (Raid cards / sound cards / network cards (good ones that is) etc.)

It's been that way for some time.... many manufacturers are only giving two PCI slots, some are only giving one these days.

I REALLY like the look of this. The board looks to be very well laid out and the cooling solution looks pretty hefty, even on the VRMs. Could we be looking at an overclocking monster? I'm pretty eager to see some numbers. Go on Tim, just a taster

I bet Tim has one of these bad boys sporting a Core 2 Quad and dual G80s purring away on his desk right now. Obviously with a pair of 1000W PSUs and its own industrial aircon unit to keep it supplied with enough power and cooling respectively.

You and your NDAs....

Does look like a nice board though.... lotsa heatsink. And if I'm right in thinking that I spotted rotated SATA ports on the side (like the original ABIT PATA ports) - finally.

hmmm...perhaps the question should be, why aren't more Raid cards/sound cards/network cards coming out in PCI-express in one form or another? Then we could just fill motherboards with a bunch of 16x-sized PCI-e slots and have all sorts of freedom of what to put where (not necessarily with all lanes in all slots functional...but you could stick in anything from a 1x device to a 16x device and run it on however many lanes were available).

A quick check of wikipedia shows me that PCI express allows 250MB/s each way per lane...while PCI maxes out around 266MB/s -- and isn't that shared between several slots?

Sounds like much better performance...but I guess the downside, then, would be that PCI parts from older computers wouldn't be usable anymore and you'd have to buy new. Manufacturers are always slow to start pushing out new technology...and in the end, it just means people buy up more old technology and manufacturers have to slow the transition even more.

I don't like the look of that chipset heatsink it's the beafiest passive one I have ever seen and has a huge surface area. This suggests to me the roumers that the conroe chipset ran too hot are true. Then again nvidia chipsets have always run hot, at the moment my current SIS chipset for 754 only has a flimsey aluminium heatsink on and has an IGP core and barley gets warm. Compare that to the nforce 3 chipset that on most boards has a fast spinning fan stuck on top of it and less features.

Like you I use 3 PCI and have SLI too and the diminishing PCI slot is a problem luckily I think DFI has thought of the enthusiast again and had developed their next gen baords with 3x 16x PCI-e and 3 PCI  so their will be a solution for Conroe/Kentsfield at least.

Black beauty.

Hopefully it won't be that expensive as I plan to upgrade before Christmas. (E6400, 1-2GB, 7950GT...)

Damn Tim. You shouldn't even allude to these things. Now I'm gonna be thinking about that damn motherboard for another 3/4 weeks.

Wow, nice looking mobo. I think it will be very expensive...the upgrade list 4 me is pretty limited 4 the momment. If you where to attach fans to the heatsinks then....PEAK OC!!!!

looking forward to this. not too keen on the huge heatsink, and the less than plentiful pci. other than that, it looks like this is gonna be a prime candidate for my next upgrade (late this year/early next year)
hope i get some $$$ for xmas...

1) Nvidia would spend less money developing their own Physics API that uses their GPUs in an ATi/Stream-esque way, than they would buying out Ageia. It's already been shown off a few times..

They think that with their superior marketing budget and list of 'favourite developers' that they can push their own (albeit lacklustre) API and dominate the Physics market.

If they succeed, I'd imagine they'll buy Ageia for the IP and merge the two APIs, with a nice hardware board ready to go. But that's just speculation, I guess.

2) GFX card + Physics card in one slot, wouldn't be easy. Power requirements, PCB space, et cetera. It's another reason to opt for the Physics API that hacks its way through a GPU. This is quite possibly why we're now seeing a 2x16 + 1x8 PCI-E configuration from both Nvidia and ATi.
