I could just requote myself saying WTF?

But infact I laughed at this one. I got images of people who buy PS3 then being punished by Sony as they burn to death.

well unless they only have like 4 charge cycles or are really crappy its not a killer problem, they are still gonna last 2 to 3 yrs before they degrade. admittedly in the future there will come a point where batteries dry up and there will be none left

Had a friend searching for a new battery for a Logitech mouse - same problem.

But isn't this common in electronics anyway? (iPod...)

Logitech say they will replace batteries FOC if they die. I believe thats what my MX1000 manual said.

Wow, another great bit of innovation, well done Sony. I'll add this to my long list of reasons not to buy a PS3.

Not a huge deal, just another little thing that sony are doing that's bad for consumers. It's not _that_ hard to make a replacable battery in a controller casing, and it would suck to end up with a faulty controller, unable to replace the batteries, just because sony wanted to maintain an aesthetic/get more money.

Sony really seem to be trying to turn the PS3 in to a joke.

hmmm. i like to get a controller with my console. and then only ever use that controler. when i use a new or different controller. it just feels wrong, its a good excuse for when you loosing. but say if the battery went and it was out of Warranty, then its a bit pointless giving up a perfectly good controller just to get 1 with a working battery

Never really liked the PS2 controller anyway - it always felt cheap and plasticky to me, and too light (and I suppose it'll be even lighter now without the rumble pack motor) with not enough tactile feedback. I know I'm not the only one who says this, so why Sony didn't take the chance to go back to the drawing board, I'll never know.

Guess I'm just used to the Xbox/X360 controllers.

This is a non-story. The only question for me is why the media is gunning for the PS3 so much?

I watched my mate replace the battery in his iPod mini yesterday. Took about 20 minutes (including browsing a how-to website), only required a screwdriver and I think the battery was £10-£15.

I'm sure once these things hit the market you'll be able to crack them open and replace the batteries in a similar way.

I think the much bigger problem is how you sync the controller to your PS3. You have to plug each one into a USB cable, then sync it and then you can unplug it and play.

I know Sony have got some stupid ideas but that's one of thier more impressive ones

like said i still play my n64, if that had a internal battery and it ran out, i couldnt play it anymore, as i wouldnt be able to source a new controller to play my games on and itll come to the point where there all dead and you cant any controllers and esentially every ps3 will become worthless as theres nothing you can plug in to play it with

not an issue now, but will be in the future, id be peed off if i couldnt play my ps3 ever again, even if it had been surpassed as im sure there will still be some great games you can come back to

I believe that if your battery is just in need of a recharge, you can plug it into the PS3 to simultaneously charge and play. So, I think, even if the battery was entirely dead forever, you should still be able to play in "wired" mode.

...not that that's any excuse for Sony. I'm not sure if these specs still stand, but I remember at some point Sony saying the PS3 could simultaneously run 2 screens and have up to 7 controllers -- with controllers being so ridiculously expensive, and possibly needing 7 of them, planned reduced functionality/obsolescence is a pretty hard hit for the consumer.

Sony seems dead set on keeping the old design of the controller and are just jamming as much crap as they can in there, I'm sure they'll actually burst, not from the battery exploding, but from the pressure of all the stuff they've crammed into the original design.

I think this comic has hit the nail on the head with sony's new console: http://www.ctrlaltdel-online.com/comic.php?d=20061011
