Yay for MS, Any idea how long until ver _.1 / OSR2 / SE / SP2 / ... ?

Actually the one thing that might get me excited about Vista is finally running my 64bit CPU at 64bit.

You mean Vista will read the manual to us? That's really clever stuff, should cut a lot of the more stupid support calls.

Woot! Here comes the new office! oh and vista...

I can't wait for the new version of office. I've been using the beta for a while now and really like it. I'll be a 1st adopter for this one. Before this beta I was still running Office 2000, never felt a reason to upgrade. As for Vista, I plan to play it safe and wait a bit. I'm sure I'll try it out once I have a reason to.

so how long until it's cracked?
or is that genuinely going to be difficult this time?

PS - had to look up 'RTM' though I knew what it meant. 'Going Gold' means something like an anniversary, or a special milestone, to me - is this a UK/USA thing?

dunno how true this is but when i was googling for drivers a few sources said oem's are only shipping 32 bit vista and retail is only 32 bit too, and to get 64 bit you need to mail in a coupon to microsoft.. if thats true does that still mean poor 64 bit driver support

Going gold means that a master manufacturing disc has been produced, these normally look gold.

Its when something reaches a particular milestone that it goes platinum

Not sure why everyone seems to be all caught up in when microsoft will release patches for its operating system in the future. Is not the delay in the release time trying to avoid a service pack or new version for at least a year or so.

The decsion to migrate to vista should not be based on when you think a service pack would be available. All hatred of microsoft aside. They have obviously put a great deal of work into this new operating system. I still have the Longhorn 4053 beta from early 2004. The operating system has come a long way since then.

I have to say that this is the first MS OS thats really got my attention. I tried RC 1&2 and have been pretty impressed. However until I have a DX10 card and 64bit drivers for my other hardware, I will not be buying it.

Its also going to be the first OS since 98 that I buy, because the constant headache of serial changing and cracking does my head in.

I do still wonder however about the overall impact of all the fanciness on Game performance. You could improve XP's performance considerably disabling services, and tweaking the registry so I imagine it will be the same with Vista.
