I built the missus a computer today, but the guy at the store revealed a 19" widescreen monitor they have on sale. I bought it for some reason, and definitely didn't think it through.

The problem is that I went with onboard graphics (MSI K8MM3-V, it uses a VIA K8m800 VGA). The drivers don't support an option for 1440x900, so I need a solution. The options I am looking at are preferably a driver hack, or an AGP graphics card at <£15 (ATi 7000 at £10 looks attractive if it will do the resolution).

I've gone through pages of google and all I get is linux or osx forums and shops.

    Thanks.

Latest driver version is 6.14.10.0297, check you've got that at the mo. Also worth making sure you've got the latest bios version installed too :)

Thanks for the help guys, I've installed BIOS version 3.00 through the MSI live update program, and the 6.14.10.0297 VGA drivers, and then the drivers for my monitor, but there is still no option to change the resolution to 1440x900 (although 1600x1200 has appeared).

This is going to sound daft, but did the monitor come with some drivers? Sometimes you might need to install monitor drivers to force a specific resolution.

Otherwise I'd say grab the cheapest proper card you can find from eBay. £10 will get you something reasonable tbh. :)

Sgtpeppa, I have the same problem, (as DougEdey stated) found HERE.

The integrated video I am dealing with is made by SiS though not VIA. I too have looked EVERYWHERE for info, but I have had no luck.

The annoying part is that the integrated video on the motherboard is often meant for value based or business based computing. Both of which, especially business computing, are often used in conjunction with widescreen LCD monitors.

I am very surprised that this hasn't shown to be a much bigger issue yet. There must be many people using this configuration, yet there is no news on it, other than a tiny blurb on SiS's website.

Chances are most people will just run in whatever res they can, not bothering with a widescreen one.

As krikkit said though, could be worth grabbing a cheap card off ebay or similar. Same goes for you MaximumShow - can't promise I can get a bios sorted anytime in the close future have LOADS of uni work which needs sorting and need to find the VGA bios from somewhere too!

does your computer recognize the monitor as brandX or as generic.
if its generic have a look for the inf file for that monitor on the web.

Yes, I installed the monitor drivers but that was no help. I managed to find a thread on a forum last night (about a month old) where several contributors had asked their motherboard vendor (ECS and Gigabyte respectively) for a BIOS which supported 1440x900, and had been emailed an updated BIOS which then sorted out their problem.

I have a feeling it's something very simple for them to fix, so I have sent MSI an email, and will see what they say.

The fix should be a matter of injecting the updated VGA bios into an exisiting bios. It's not a massive task and should be easier for the mobo manufactures as they should have easy access to the new VGA bios

That's what I figured, but Asus tech support basically told me to screw off because it was SiS's fault not their's. :wallbash:

Well MSI have replied and are telling me that the chipset doesn't support widescreen resolutions. I've sent another email off but I think I'm going to bite the bullet and pick up a cheap card instead (they'll only continue to ignore me).

Is a Radeon 7000 a sensible choice for 2d work at 1440x900 resolution?

Radeon 7000 is a bit old, a Radeon 9 or GeForce FX series card would probably be a bit more sensible.
