Progressive updates is something that the open source community has been doing for many years now, so it's questionable whether the patent application will be accepted.
Let's hope so... Or it will harm the OSS community to a great extend...

The patent enables nothing, MS can do this without that patent. Patents only prevent others from doing the same. If, as you say, this has been going on in the open source community then this patent better get denied.

Thanks Tyinsar, was a slip of the fingers writing quickly while trying not to miss a train back from London. Cleared up the phrasing.

Xorg is fully modular, so are KDE and other bigger suites...

IF MS get's the patent, what would happen to such projects?

And does this aply to kernel modules too? I like the modular design of my kernel... Updates without rebooting

Let's hope MS gets told that this is a stupid patent. This, like much of what gets "introduced" in Windows is, umm, "borrowed" from others. I'm just amazed that MS doesn't get hit with software patent suits all the time. Then again, when you have the money you just buy what you want first.

I always wondered how MS would compete with Linux. If the patent office lets this slip through I think I'll have to apply to patent the word "the".

BTW, anyone know if MS has tried to patent tabbed browsing yet?

I think they're still trying to figure out how to patent "right-click" or maybe any word / company name / website ending in "soft" or...

Edit: "the"

The patent also outlines Microsoft's plans to use a license validation module with DRM and product activation employed to enforce licensing agreements.
That truly is evil, especially as the **AA will demand that all base modules of Windows Modular include the DRM module.
