I may have missed something, but whats AMD/ATI's Nforce 680i equivalent? I.e. no integrated graphics, good overclocking?

AMD RD600, for Intel, and 580X for AMD.

interesting AMD said they would never make there own chipsets (in the DDR vs RD ram days)... cruel the hand of fate is (yoda I am)

Hard launch? Soft launch?

For crying out loud. Either the thing is available to buy or it isn't, and until it is, it has not been launched, irrespective of any fashionable prefixes you care to apply.

no it seems that now AMD took over ATI all mentions of the word ATI are replaced with AMD

No, actually AMD has kept the ATI name in most of its related products...
